Asphalt Emulsion R&D Manager

This R&D Manager will be responsible for directing 3 (2 Chemists / and a lab tech) in Emulsifier R&D, technical services, formulations, field support, and associated lab operations.  This person will supervise asphalt emulsifier and associated mixture testing in the laboratory both for R&D and technical service projects, manage priorities, schedule resources, manage materials, records, and team training.  This person will be responsible for executing AASHTO accreditation for the liquids testing laboratory.  This person will be responsible for surfactant and raw material evaluations and new innovations in asphalt emulsifiers.

Activities:

  • Understand and operate a safe laboratory working environment maintaining necessary training, organization, inventory, and cleanliness
  • Contribute to understanding of market dynamics, identify product needs for the market and champion innovation projects with sales, business development and marketing teams in the area of asphalt emulsions and applications
  • Balance technical service and innovation projects to develop balanced portfolio
  • Identify and evaluate novel chemistries and applications in collaboration with synthesis team
  • Work closely with the BU leadership to drive the technical programs through the different phases of commercialization. Makes use of Portfolio management and Stage Gate to successfully drive programs to commercialization
  • Active participation in developing and maintaining IP portfolio
  • Maintain knowledge of specifications (AASHTO, ASTM, State DOT and, local). Maintain chemical and asphalt inventory, labeling, storage life and quality
  • Responsible for talent recruitment, performance reviews and talent development in the team,
  • Create and maintain standard operating procedures to ensure consistent operations and quality data
  • Provide clear and concise communication, in both written and verbal form, to internal and external customers
  • Some travel required to meet customers and attend industry conferences to showcase technical expertise

Job Requirements

Technical Qualifications:

  • MS or PhD in Organic or Polymer Chemistry or Physical Chemistry or related scientific discipline required
  • 5-10 years’ experience in asphalt related formulations and / or related laboratory operations desired
  • Experience in designing / selecting surfactants, material property characterization desired
  • Thorough knowledge of laboratory safety policies and procedures, chemical and physical hazards, and other precautions to promote an effective and safe workplace
  • Thorough working knowledge of asphalt cement and asphalt emulsion processes and specifications
  • Thorough working knowledge of asphalt testing equipment, maintenance, and calibration
  • Strong ability to manage projects
  • Demonstrated computer proficiency
  • The ability to build and maintain effective internal and external relationships
