Chemist

The Chemist will have the following responsibilities:

  • Working with existing paint components, formulations, samples, and raw materials, to drive business through performance specifications of company’s components as identified by the CTO
  • The development of new paint components and formulations according to technical and performance specifications
  • Directing technicians
  • Perform analyses, tests, and development of new or updated component formulations that require an intermediate understanding of chemistry, product lines, materials and application principles and testing; assist with determining quality standards
  • Develop and create paint formulations and manufacture paint samples for new paints
  • Develop and scale production batch formulations and coding
  • Record observations and results of testing and manufacturing in project lab books and in Excel files, develop reports and documents detailing tests, projects, and overall results
  • Create and develop detailed specifications for all new company components
  • Communicate and coordinate with raw material suppliers
  • Analyze, evaluate, and select new raw materials for their utility in existing and new formulations, and maintain SDS files on raw materials and company components
  • Verify quality assurance data to insure company components are produced to exact specifications
  • Provide professional support to the product development, quality control, manufacturing processes, and other operations
  • Interpret and apply applicable laws and regulations of various countries to ensure compliance with these areas
  • Respond to complex customer concerns and complaints from the field
  • Maintain and update Safety Data Sheet files for all company departments
  • Develop and create product comparisons for the purpose of marketing company products
  • Assist with general project development and provide input regarding budget, resources, timelines, and other project requirements. Perform other duties as assigned
  • Communicate effectively with management and staff as required

Requirements:

  • BS degree and 1+ years of industry experience in formulation or testing of water-based coatings (Architectural preferred, but industry is okay too). They will consider non-degreed candidate with this industry experience
  • Must have an understanding of color dispersions and related resin systems. Ideally, understanding of acrylic resin systems and VAE copolymers
  • Prefer working knowledge of BatchMaster or related process manufacturing ERP software
  • Ability to work in a self-directed environment and prioritize daily project tasks
  • Should be creative, a good problem solver, and excellent follow-through skills
  • Ability to balance tactical and strategic initiatives set forth by company
  • Must have the ability to interact with customers through strong interpersonal communication skills
