Coating Product & Process Scientist

The Coatings Product & Process Scientist is responsible for product & process development of wet chemical coatings on glass products that are required for functional and/or decorative applications (inks and/or adhesives is preferred).  The position will support development projects from early stage development related to material and process selection and qualification to scale-up and line establishment.  A deep technical understanding as well as industrial process experience related to wet chemical coatings is required to develop product and processes with the appropriate physical properties as per market place requirements.  This position reports into the Corporate Development organization and will have interactions across company businesses and external industrial collaborations.    Responsibilities to include:

  • Key subject matter expert on wet chemical product and/or process development projects typically related to adhesives, inks, optical or tactical coatings. Support may include material and/or process evaluations, qualifications, transfers to manufacturing, and/or deep technical problem solving
  • Engage with chemical suppliers and process equipment partners to develop appropriate materials and processes for desired performance. Processes can include spray, dip, printing
  • Utilize an understanding of wet chemistries and glass surface morphology, chemical bonding and structure/property relationships to identify material and process knobs impacting image quality, durability and feel of the printed glass
  • Work closely with team members to understand customer needs, translate into requirements, define and optimize cost, product attributes and process trade-offs
  • Collaborate with resources from various disciplines (research, engineering, manufacturing, characterization, analysis, modeling, capabilities)
  • Use Design of Experiments and first principle knowledge to develop and improve products and processes
  • Effective documentation of experiment plans, internal reports, operating procedures, specifications, decision analysis, and process changes
  • Defines opportunities for intellectual property creation and files invention disclosures and patent applications
  • Work with company resources to assure a safe work environment for current and new processes, and compliance to company’s environmental policy
  • 10-30% domestic and international travel depending on project assignment

Requirements:

  • PhD or MS in General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Polymeric Science, Chemical Engineering; or Materials Engineering
  • Experience: 5+ years of development experience including transferring to or time in manufacturing of wet chemical applications onto glass
  • Understand the market requirements for decorative and functional wet coating applications on glass and translate the marketing needs into technical deliverables
  • Knowledge of organic/inorganic coatings, polymers, resins, crosslinking agents, matting agents, solvents and other critical additives commonly used in the coatings industries
  • Knowledge of common industrial testing protocols for coatings glasses and metals including methods for adhesion, flow, ink stability, weather and corrosion resistance
  • In-depth knowledge of wet coating industrial processes (spray, dip, screen printing, ink jet printing)
  • Ability to translate early stage customer needs/wants into product & process development requirements and test plans
  • Experience with early stage development and transfer to manufacturing
  • Effective communication and presentation skills to all levels in the organization
  • Commitment to drive for results with minimal supervision
  • Team / project leadership; organized with proven track record of delivery
  • Technical collaboration and cross-functional coordination
  • Excellent presentation skills, and ability to distill technical topics for management consumption
