Coatings Chemist

Chemist role available with a growing coatings manufacturer.  Responsibilities include formulations and improving manufacturing processes.  This role will work alongside tenured industry professionals and play a big role in improving current products and processes for customers.

You will spend your day conducting all required tests, extractions, and studies including calculating weight solids, volume solids, VOCs, and formular pricing; perform color matching visually without use of a spectrophotometer; formulate products that translate easily into the production environment; participate in quality audits and manage quality control in production; and accurately record all data & provide regular updates to the Director of R&D.

Job Requirements

Technical Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, or related technical degree
  • 5 years of experience in a laboratory setting
  • Previous experience creating, implementing, & improving manufacturing processes
  • Thorough understanding of the General Industrial Coatings market and coatings clears and pigmented:
    • Solvent-based solution acrylic sealers
    • 2-part water based and solvent-based acrylic urethanes
    • 2-part water based and 100% solid epoxies
    • 2-part polyaspartic and urethane systems
    • Cementitious overlays
    • Acrylic emulsion
    • Polyurethane dispersion
    • Silane and silicone
    • Alkyd
  • Must have proven familiarity with basic coatings lab equipment including but not limited to: Zahn viscosity cups. Stormer viscometer, gloss meter, fineness of grind gauge, and draw down bars
  • Solid working knowledge of analytical method development and validation
  • General knowledge of cement chemistry and other various substrates
  • Proficiency in various liquid coating formulations for the architectural market
  • Commitment to compliance with standard operating procedures
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and working knowledge of Outlook
  • Ability to accurately discern colors
  • Working knowledge of VOC and DOT regulations
  • Knowledge and working experience handling hazardous materials related to coatings
  • Familiar with building code requirements with LEEDs
  • A commitment to compliance with standard operating and safety procedures
  • Previous experience creating, implementing, & improving manufacturing processes
  • A passionate & positive “can do” attitude, willingness to learn, to teach, and to be a change agent within the company
  • An ability to work with a team environment and help the team become better
  • A personality to work collaboratively with customers to solve problems
