Coatings Chemist
Chemical manufacturer is seeking an experienced Coatings Chemist to join our Research & Development team and formulate silicone and acrylic based coatings. If you have a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and at least 3 years of coating formulation experience, this could be a great opportunity for you! The company has a great culture and is growing!
Duties:
- Formulate and develop roof coatings including silicone and acrylic systems, waterproofing products, and sealants
- Select, evaluate, and optimize raw materials such as resins, fillers, pigments, solvents, and performance additives
- Develop formulations to meet performance, cost, and regulatory requirements
- Conduct laboratory testing of coating properties including viscosity, adhesion, tensile strength, elongation, weathering, UV resistance, chemical resistance, and water resistance
- Perform testing in accordance with ASTM and internal test method
- Modify existing formulations to improve durability, application properties, cure behavior, and long-term performance
- Support manufacturing by troubleshooting formulation- and process-related issues
- Stay current on industry trends, new raw materials, and emerging technologies in roof coatings and waterproofing
- Proposing new product concepts and formulation improvements
- Work closely with production and engineering teams to scale formulations from lab to pilot and full-scale manufacturing
- Provide technical guidance during production trials and product launches
- Maintain detailed laboratory records and experimental documentation
- Analyze data and prepare technical reports, summaries, and presentations for internal team
- Assist in developing quality control specifications for raw materials and finished products
- Ensure compliance with safety, environmental, and regulatory standards
- Maintain a safe, organized laboratory environment

Job Requirements
Technical Qualifications:
- A Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry, Polymer Science, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a closely related field is required. A Master’s degree or Ph.D. may be preferred for senior or research-intensive roles.
- 3-5 years of hands-on experience in a coatings laboratory environment
- Experience with specific coating technologies (e.g., waterborne, solvent-borne, UV-curable, powder coatings) may be necessary depending on the role
- Strong knowledge of polymer chemistry and formulation principles
- Proficiency in operating and interpreting data from standard laboratory equipment such as viscometers, spectrophotometers, gloss meters, and various physical testing apparatus
- Familiarity with analytical techniques like spectroscopy (FTIR, UV-Vis), chromatography (GC, HPLC) and thermal analysis (DSC, TGA)
- Understanding of experimental design (DOE) is a plus
