Coatings Development Chemist
Industry leader is looking for an experienced solvent based coatings formulator for their brand new innovation center in the Charlotte area! This is a unique opportunity to help set up a new lab!
Duties:
- Supporting the design, installation, commissioning, and on-going maintenance of the coatings laboratory to support coatings formulation and applications
- Maintaining accurate records of research data, formulations, and test results
- Experimenting with mineral additives in different resins, binders, and pigment systems to achieve optimal performance (e.g., adhesion, corrosion resistance, chemical resistance, heat tolerance, and durability in harsh environments to name a few) depending on the application
- Conducting various tests on coatings to assess their performance characteristics according to industry standards
- Providing technical support to sales and production teams regarding coating selection, application, and troubleshooting
- Collaborating with customers to understand their specific needs and develop customized coating solutions
- Assisting in resolving any issues that may arise during the application or use of coatings
- Contributing to a cross-functional team that develops IP strategy in the coatings space
- Staying up to date on the latest advancements in coating technology and incorporating them into new formulations

Job Requirements
Technical Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in coatings, polymers, chemistry, material science, or a relevant degree with 3-5 years of experience in the relevant industry
- In-depth understanding of the science behind formulation of solvent, high solids, and/or waterborne coatings
- Evaluating factors affecting adhesion, corrosion resistance, weatherability, color, and physical performance in harsh environments
- Knowledge of different resin types such as vinyl, epoxies, polyesters and polyurethanes
- Execution of industry standards and testing methods
- Experience with equipment used for processing and application of coatings (e.g., spray painting, dipping, or coil coating) relevant to specific industry
