Coatings Tech Service Chemist

The role is responsible for supporting North American Coatings Technical Service and R&D efforts.  Product recommendations, customer support, paint formulating and testing of resins for various coatings applications are the main components of this job.  Detailed record keeping and effective communication with synthesis, customers and sales regarding coatings resins performance properties.  This position may also coordinate activities for junior chemists and technicians.  The role is also an integral part of the developmental process and provides the information needed to successfully commercialize new products.

Project Management and Execution:

Lead various stages of selected product development projects including project initiation and property evaluation.  Must manage resources and activities in these areas and be accountable for timelines and targets.  Champion projects that support the business strategy.  This includes new product development and modifications to the existing product line.  Project design, compounding of resins into coatings and testing of cured film properties are part of this role.  Benchmark prototype coatings to standards (project profiles, internal and external standards), developing performance data along with formulation guidelines are also necessary.  Support customers through applications testing, troubleshooting and technical service.

Customer Interaction:

Verbal, written communication and customer visits

This will include phone conversations, e-mails, preparation of reports to customers, customer initiatives, product recommendations, presentations and troubleshooting of customer problems.  Demonstration of familiarity with market size, profitability, and competitive situations in areas of expertise is needed.

Mentoring / project communication with application chemist:

Provide expert guidance to other application chemists to ensure projects move toward completion

Requirements:

  • Expert knowledge of current coatings formulation techniques, processing, application equipment and testing is required
  • Communication skills demonstrated by both oral and written means along the ability to present results internally and to customers
  • Strong project management skills along with the capability to independently direct projects and other chemists are also needed
  • Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or Polymer Science strongly preferred with 5 to 10 years coatings formulation experience in the coatings industry. Preferred candidate would have strong paint formulating knowledge with acrylic, alkyd, polyester resins for the industrial market
