Coatings and/or Ink Chemist

Responsible for the preparation of novel carbon black materials, to support surface treatment/modification projects and the subsequent analysis in laboratory and customer prescribed formulations.  Testing new dispersants in standard formulations to provide data to the technical service organization.  Works primarily under the direction of the applications manager.  Duties include organization and interpretation of data collected from these analyses, formal report/memo writing, plus test method development, and directed or independent investigative testing associated with liquids systems.

Job Description:

  • Perform laboratory tests according to established procedures, and with minor modifications (such as dispersant studies)
  • Review procedures prior to beginning tasks
  • Update procedures as needed
  • Create novel carbon black samples using new treatment approaches
  • Safely conduct novel experiments
  • Compile data, calculate results, report findings (LIMS), and maintain accurate records
  • Create tabular and graphical representations of generated data
  • Interpret data and prepare technical reports/memos to meet the demands of various customers (internal and external)
  • Interpret data and present findings in a standardized format to provide an answer to the customer’s inquiry/concern
  • Write technical reports
  • Generate Power Point presentations as needed
  • Maintain cleanliness and appearance of laboratory
  • Cleans equipment (i.e., bottles, shot, mills, mixers) after task completion
  • Cleans spills immediately
  • Disposes of mixed samples (liquids) following job completion
  • Returns samples to receiving area
  • Empties vacuums, solvent and solid waste
  • Assist in training (internally and externally)
  • Provide liquids systems training to new employees and distributors

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree (chemistry or related field)
  • 1-2 years of related experience
  • Understanding of carbon black applications
  • Exceptional organization skills
  • Exceptional written and verbal skills
  • Proficient in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Travel: Less than 10%
  • Previous ink, paint, or coating formulation experience
