Construction Safety Manager

Construction organization with ties to green industry is looking for a Safety Manager due to significant growth.  The ideal candidate will have experience developing safety programs from the ground up and creating a safety culture.  Construction industry experience required.

The Construction Safety Manager will be responsible for planning, coordinating, and managing programs to compliance with OSHA, EPA and company specific EHS requirements.  The Construction Safety Manager will serve as the initial point of contact for safety and environmental related incident response, investigations, customer qualification processes and reporting.  This position reports to the Vice President of Human Resources and Safety.

Essential Job Functions (including but not limited to):

  • Quarterback EHS program development and management for the Company’s national operational presence, covering the 48 continuous States
  • Work closely with the VP, HR/Safety to develop and manage ISO45001 and ISO14001 development, registration and ongoing management and system improvement
  • Responsible for coordinating and monitoring employee safety and OSHA compliance in the field as well as company owned offices, shops and yards
  • Effectively coordinates and works with brand managers and field crews to understand their needs and provide safety and environmental compliance support
  • Schedules and executes safety inspections/audits for compliance against OSHA, EPA and ISO45001 / ISO14001 requirements
  • Issues Non-conformance reports (NCRs) for findings observed in field project visits and internal audits relating to ISO45001 and ISO14001
  • Manages root cause analysis, reporting and corrective/preventive actions process to address NCRs as they are issued
  • Maintains records of activity and compliance for OSHA, EPA and ISO (45001 / 14001) requirements
  • Works closely with VP, HR-Safety on workers compensation, light duty, RTW activities
  • Lead pre-project planning, JHAs, project kick-off meetings, etc…relative to safety and environmental requirements of customers
  • Execute all EHS related training to comply with government regulations and ISO requirements
  • Drive use of Trumpia platform to provide regular ‘reminder’ training and safety reminders to field staff

Job Requirements

Educational and Practical Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in engineering discipline, occupational safety, construction management (8-10 years tenure in a similar position may be considered in lieu of educational preferences
  • 5-7 years of experience in a like position, ideally in construction or field oriented industry
  • Special training and knowledge of ISO9001, ISO14001 and ISO45001 as well as OSHA. ISO Internal Auditor
  • Professional certification preferred, but not critical (CHST, CSP, ASP, etc.)
  • Experience with auditing / inspecting job sites
  • Strong functional knowledge of safety program development, implementation and management processes
  • History of establishing a world class safety-first culture

Special Skills / Abilities:

  • Strong oral communication skills necessary to communicate over the telephone and in-person with all company personnel, clients and suppliers
  • Physical and mental ability to work in an environment with rapid business growth and pressure due to business demands
  • Outstanding verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Strong conflict resolution and critical-thinking skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and multi-tasking abilities while dealing with continuous interruptions

Physical Requirements:

  • Some physical effort required. Must be able to tolerate extended periods of sitting or standing; frequent use of a computer and cell phone and have the ability to communicate and hear effectively
  • The employee is often required to stand and walk safely in the office and at job sites, reach with hands, arms and stoop and bend and life/carry up to 30 lbs.
  • Flow of work and character of duties involves normal visual and mental attention
  • Duties require willingness to work a flexible schedule and/or weekends
  • Frequent travel to job sites and other Branch locations is expected, including out of State, over night trips. Assume travel between 30-50% from reporting Branch location
