Dairy / Dairy Alternative Applications Scientist

The Applications Scientist effectively supports all pilot plant and food lab processes and works with CTS peers to design and implement new processes and equipment to improve efficiency, food quality, and food safety.  Interfaces with all levels of CTS, Sales, Marketing, R&D, Regulatory, Legal departments as well as customers.  Practices sound technical, communication and negotiation skills that ensure the successful implementation and delivery of application projects

Responsibilities:

  • Extensive process knowledge in Dairy beverage, creamers and cultured products, batching/blending, HTST (High Temperature Short Time), HHST (Higher Heat Shorter Time), UHT (Ultra High Temperature), Homogenizers
  • Expertise in Equipment and piping cleaning and sanitation: CIP, COP, SIP, Sterilization, Disinfection
  • Understand and document current processes, identify areas for improvement, develop solutions for future states and implement sustaining improvements
  • Optimize current processes to meet all regulator and internal requirements
  • Must practice proven decision-making skills, working effectively under pressure and possessing the integrity to make the right decisions
  • Develop relationships and solicit input into process improvement design considerations from key technical resources
  • Development of internal policies, procedures, documentation and facilitating training on current and new processes across the CTS team
  • Create and animate training for sales, customers and/or go to market resources
  • Due diligence in keeping trial records with proper documentation to facilitate innovative and protect the value through patenting of our solutions
  • Participate in customers trials, with a high degree of technical challenge
  • Deliver technical seminars on product and process solutions at customer’s and large group settings
  • Manage operation and development of SOP for equipment related to segment
  • Contribute to a safe and environmentally friendly workplace and comply with company’s safety policies and SOP

Technical:

  • Solid technical base refined with broad application experience
  • Dairy and Plant based beverage, creamers and yogurt [Set Type, Stirred Type, and Drink Type] processing, including starter injection, Pasteurization, Homogenization, De-aeration, HHST Treatment, Flavoring, Cooling, Batching (ingredient incorporation), Processing (Sterilization), and Clean-In-Place (CIP) equipment and methods
  • Possess an intuitive, common sense approach to addressing technical opportunities
  • Facilitate process feasibility studies
  • Develop process engineering documentation including equipment specifications, process standards, and process best practices

Requirements:

  • Minimum BSc, Masters or PhD in Food Science, Food Engineering, and Chemical Process Technology from an accredited College or University
  • Minimum four (4) to six (6) years dairy process and formulation experience required, preferably in CPG beverage / food manufacturing
  • Managerial: Leadership, project management, able to coach
  • Leadership: Technical Leader to coordinate and execute cross functional projects
  • Manufacturing experience a plus
  • Knowledge and experience with specialty ingredients – starches, proteins and sweeteners desired
  • Effective team player, independent and resourceful
  • Strong process engineering knowledge with mechanical / electrical / controls aptitude
  • Must be highly self-directed and able to work independently as well as part of a team
  • Communicate effectively across all levels within organization
  • Work collaboratively and build effective relationships with others
  • Flexible to consider additional information or ideas when formulating solutions
  • The ability to use knowledge, facts, data and professional insights to effectively solve problems and put in place best practice solutions
  • Must be exceptionally organized and self-disciplined to accommodate the management of concurrent multiple projects
  • Fast learner and quickly adapts to change
  • Must have fully developed written and presentation skills
  • Solid understanding of food safety regulations
  • Plant Based Beverage (PBB) experience a plus
