EHS Manager

Global organization with a 2022 EcoVadis Gold sustainability rating is looking for an EHS Manager to join their growing company in Chicago.

The EHS Manager will have the following duties and responsibilities:

  • Ensures, through line management, that the Company, employees and agents comply with regulations, procedures, policies, and codes of practice which are in force
    Observes requirements for statutory notifications and maintains relevant records to ensure compliance (i.e., federal, state and local)
    • Collates reports of incidents and ensures remedial actions are carried out. Prepares metrics/statistics relevant to Company safety and the associated costs
    • Keeps the Site Manager aware of developments on safety, health and environmental matters including internal trends to related to auditing and incidents
    • Works as a member of the Food Safety Team/Food Defense team to ensure that the requirements of FSSC 22000 and 22002 are met and the site achieves and maintains GFSI status
    • Advises the company on all aspects of fire protection; ensures proper selection and operation of fire warning and fire-fighting equipment and procedures; and maintains statutory records in this respect
    • Monitors new projects and existing processes to ensure compliance with health, safety and environmental requirements. In this respect, ensures that proper hazard and operability studies are carried out so the best design and operation is attained
    • Keeps abreast of present and proposed legislation, codes of practice and standards. Keeps informed on the chemical, physical and biological properties of chemicals present on site also, all plant processes and up-to-date principles of safety management, fire protection and loss control
    • Chairs the Safety Committee and ensures that regular safety inspections are carried out; reported and remedial actions are agreed with line management
    • Acts as Company contact with statutory, official and other organizations in the field of safety, health and environment
    • Promotes interest and awareness of health, safety and environmental issues at all levels through the development of training materials and up-to-date SSHE procedures
    • Organizes, develops and carries out appropriate safety training in both a face-to-face setting and computer-based training format
    • Ensures that contractors and their coordinators are properly briefed to work on site in accordance with the Company's rules, practice and governmental regulations
    • Liaise with the Company's insurers on matters relating to:
    o employee liability claims
    o fire prevention/detection
    o other regulations/requirements
    • Ensures that safety data on all materials used on site are available to all relevant employees (SDSs)
    • Works closely to with site security to ensure all security procedures are well understood and known for emergency situations (e.g. evacuation, fire, tornado, etc.)
    • Develops procedures for inspection/monitoring of safety and environmental installations; also, analyzes results and maintains proper records
    • Ensures that proper contact is maintained with:
    o Governmental agencies (i.e., EPA, OSHA, etc.)
    o State and city agencies (i.e., IEPA, MWRD)
    o Other companies owned by the corporation

Job Requirements

Technical Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science degree, preferably in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or related science, plus a minimum of 5 years previous experience in safety management
  • A degree or certificate in Industrial Hygiene is desirable, but not essential
  • The individual should have a persuasive personality that, when combine with necessary technical background will command respect from employees and third parties alike
