EHS Specialist

The EHS Specialist is responsible for assisting facility to achieve and maintain compliance with company SHE policies and applicable federal, state, and local environmental regulatory requirements, employee safety programs, and process safety regulations through understanding, monitoring, and documenting compliance.

The job holder provides occupational health surveillance programs that will minimize injuries and illnesses, maintain compliance with regulatory health, radiation and product safety requirements, and maintain a healthy work force.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Visibly lead, support, and promote the 20 Principles for Managing Behavioral Safety and Process Safety and the Lifesaving Rules
  • Be the point contact for operations and maintenance safety concerns in assigned area with a focus to understand, resolve, and if necessary, elevate to the SHE manager
  • Maintain compliance with HAZCOM
  • Maintain up-to-date site chemical inventories for Tier II Reporting
  • Ensure necessary labeling of containers
  • Communicate health hazard information to plant customers
  • Serve as facility Site Emergency Response Training Coordinator/Fire Chief
  • Develop and deliver site emergency response training to the fire brigade
  • Schedule and conduct site quarterly emergency drills
  • Assists the incident commander during site emergencies
  • Work with Incident Commander to ensure the safety of all responding personnel during an emergency
  • Coordinate emergency activities with Local Emergency Planning Committees
  • Design, implement, and monitor site employee safety programs to eliminate or minimize employee injuries
  • Actively participate in the MOC process to ensure compliance in assigned area
  • Actively lead their assigned area to participate in behavioral based safety program
  • Work with SHE Manager to develop site-wide safety and health programs to ensure compliance and to minimize risks
  • Conduct field observations of employees and contractors performing work
  • Conduct investigations of employee injuries, identifying root causes and corrective actions
  • Lead contractor’s safety program in their assigned area
  • Develop and support the use of a site safety compliance audit protocol. Review completed audits and develop corrective actions to close identified gaps
  • Update site safety procedures and policies. (This should be led by the SHE manager / PSM lead)
  • Assess new technologies and practices to reduce the risk of injuries / illnesses, and evaluate trends and site performance on safety and health system elements to make recommendations for improvements
  • Conduct site safety training for site employees on safety and health issues
  • Conduct safety trend analysis and develop improvement plans based on findings
  • Ensure the site maintains compliance with OSHA mandated industrial hygiene surveillance programs for new and current employees in order to maintain a healthy work force
  • Chemical exposure responsibilities:
    • Acrylonitrile
    • Hearing conservation
    • Radiation safety
    • Asbestos abatement
    • Lead abatement
  • Identify and evaluate health hazards that may create employee exposure risks, communicate these risks to site employees and management, and develop compliance and control strategies to minimize employee exposure and risks
  • Review regulatory agency, occupational health and industry association publications and corporate occupational health guidelines to identify potential health hazard risks and business risks
  • Evaluate industrial hygiene data and potential exposure risks for new raw materials, new supply materials, new processes and any process modifications
  • Oversee management of respiratory protection systems and portable air monitor devices
  • Quantify the exposure risk to specific site chemical, physical, ergonomic and biological health hazards
  • Use of a work exposure assessment process to evaluate employee exposure to health risks by process area and employee group
  • Use of analytical instrumentation to measure health hazard risks identified by the assessment process that pose a significant potential health risk and comparison of these measurement results to known occupational exposure guidelines to quantify risk
  • Communicate the results of exposure assessment and field measurements to exposed employees and their managers
  • Develop engineering and work practice controls to minimize exposure and to maintain these risks to below known occupational health exposure guidelines

  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college or 5+ years’ experience working in a chemical plant environment is preferred
  • Expert in Fire Safety Systems; Fire Brigade Management; Fire Suppression Systems a plus. 
  • Knowledgeable in SHE Technical Areas preferred
  • RCRA hazardous waste knowledge desired
  • Demonstrates understanding of operations and union interaction
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to correctly interpret and apply SHE regulations
  • Competent in the use of Microsoft and Adobe software and ability to develop competency in the use of ancillary software applications used by the site
