EHS Specialist
This well-established organization is growing their EHS Team and is looking for an EHS Specialist to join the team. Once this position is filled, the EHS team onsite will have 4 EHS professionals.
The Environmental, Health and Safety Specialist provides functional and operational EH&S support to site operations to ensure compliance around worker safety, environmental compliance to air, water and waste regulations while also progressing and improving EH&S quality systems and sustainability performance. The position manages and delivers EH&S training for the organization while also conducts performance reviews of statistical EH&S data trends to determine risk reduction / avoidance initiatives. The Environmental, Health and Safety Specialist reports to the plant EH&S Manager who in turn reports to the Corporate Director of EH&S and Regulatory Compliance, who in turn reports to the President of the corporation. Most frequent contacts include Plant EH&S Manager; Operations Management; Maintenance Management; Engineering and hourly production and maintenance employees; and Security Personnel as well as Plant Leadership Team. Other contact interactions may involve regulatory agencies, emergency response personnel and legal counsel. The position requires the ability to work effectively in a diverse team environment. Examples of important industrial skill sets required to be successful in the position include, but are not limited to, working effectively within a team, building partnerships across functional business lines, analytical thinking, problem-solving, people management skills as well as the ability to communicate in non-technical terms to non-technical individuals. The key challenge and responsibility of the position is to assist in driving and leading a health and safety culture change by identifying EH&S “gaps” in training, policy, and operating practices. Once identified, develop and lead initiatives to strengthen concerns.

Salary
$80,000 - $100,000
Job Requirements
Education and Experience: (Required)
- B.S. degree in occupational health, safety science, safety engineering or a related science or technical field
- 3-5 years of progressive experience in Environmental, Health and Safety programs
- Working knowledge of Environmental, Health, Safety and Security regulations
- Environmental, Health and Safety experience with a chemical manufacturing environment or petro-chemical industry is desired
- Environmental experience: Hazardous Waste rules for Large Quantity Generators; Air rules related to Title V or Part 70 air permit reporting; and Water rules related to NPDES reporting
- Professional certification desired: ASP, CSP, CIH, CHMM
- Proven skills strategic thinking, influencing and levering others to improve performance. Understanding of behavioral science / behavior modification techniques; proven track record in behavior-based safety cultural improvements
- Experience interfacing / communication with regulatory agencies (OSHA, EPA) verbally in writing and on-site inspections
- Excellent presentation, written and verbal communication skills
- Computer skills a must, with knowledge of MS Outlook, MS Word, MS Excel and MS PowerPoint
- Metrics Orientation
Technical Knowledge:
- Knowledge of Federal / State EPA and OSHA compliance requirements
- Ability to communicate with all levels of the organization and job site personnel clearly and effectively via written work and oral presentation as necessary
- Experience working in a union environment is preferred
- Computer skills a must, with knowledge of MS Outlook, MS Word, MS Excel, and MS PowerPoint, ERP knowledge and experience are a plus
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to respond to visual and audible alarms
- Must be able to wear personal protective equipment
- Must be able to work around hazardous chemical and exposure to dust
- Ability to regularly work in and be exposed to outside weather elements (i.e., rain, snow, cold, heat)
- Physical ability to regularly work around and on industrial equipment, including frequent climbing of stairs and ladders, walking climbing, bending kneeling, crouch or squat, twist, stooping and standing. Frequently need to talk, hear, and use hands. Must be able to occasionally lift moderately heavy objects up to 40 pounds
