Food Scientist

Position Summary:

Contribute to the Research & Development team by performing new product development, research projects, sensory evaluations, and maintenance of existing products. Operate effectively both independently and as a contributing team member in a fast-paced environment. The ability to carefully follow instructions and adapt quickly to shifting priorities is essential. Good critical thinking, communication skills, and ability to utilize a scientific approach are essential.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Operate and maintain laboratory and kitchen equipment using established procedures.
  • Critically evaluate samples and initiate formulation adjustments as needed.
  • Operate independently on daily assignments with minimal direction.
  • Accurately weigh and measure items and ingredients used to perform responsibilities.
  • Prepare samples for internal and external customer reviews using established procedures.
  • Identify opportunities for process optimization and ingredient cost savings.
  • Exhibit a basic understanding of food science principles and basic experimental design in order to conduct product research.
  • Communicate with suppliers and vendors to identify new functional ingredients.
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of ingredient functionality and technical terminology in order to develop new product formulations or adjust existing formulae with minimal guidance.
  • Manage basic projects from concept generation through scale-up, in accordance with customer requirements and project parameters.
  • Advance multiple projects with competing timelines.
  • Apply understanding of internal flavor profiles, functionalities, and usage levels to make appropriate application recommendations.
  • Taste and effectively communicate detailed, constructive feedback during sensory evaluations.
  • Write clear and concise preparation instructions for consumers and production personnel.
  • Lead pilot plant trials and product scale-ups including scheduling, ordering ingredients, and organizing of pre and post-trial meetings.
  • Use basic computer skills including effective use of Microsoft Office and Genesis Nutritional Software.
  • Follow Good Manufacturing Practices when working in lab and production settings.
  • Perform other duties/responsibilities as assigned by supervisor or management.

Requirements:

  • Four-year Bachelor’s degree or higher degree in Dairy [Food] Science, Food Science, Culinology, or related science field.
  • 2+ years of experience in the food industry
