Formulation Chemist
Privately held chemical manufacturer looking for an experienced elastomeric/urethane formulator to join their organization. This opportunity allows you to work with other departments and be very independent in the lab! Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develops compounds and formulas for new/existing items
- Acquires pricing, data, color matches, etc. from suppliers
- Compounds materials, molds test pieces, performs material testing, and evaluates results to validate conformance to specification
- Recommends and evaluates replacements and substitutions
- Maintains an accurate and thorough database of all formulas, with ASTM D2000 performance specifications and typical results, specific gravities, etc.
- Prepare technical data sheets for customers
- Oversees material-related measuring, testing, and processing parameters used in manufacturing
- Develops/reviews milling and mixing procedures
- Develops rheometer curve limit specifications
- Trouble-shoots material processing problems
- Shelf-Life Inventory: Dispositions non-conforming and aged lots of material
- Ensures that Foreign Distribution product conforms to its ASTM D2000 specification
- Recommends metal prep methods and adhesive systems
- Recommends cryogenic deflashing temperatures and duration
- Participates in Mill Rescue Team
- Maintaining active formula quoting guides for quoting and material selection, with overviews of properties, processability, availability and cost
- Acting as a consultant to others on new product development, trouble-shooting existing items, investigating field failures, and purchasing processing equipment
- Assisting in sales presentations and internal material training
- Purchases and maintains all lab equipment and software
- Develops internal test methods in accordance with industry practices
- Maintains procedures and records
- Reviews out material portfolio against market needs and industry developments, recommending new compounds and ingredients, suppliers, testing and production methods technologies and equipment
- Performs other duties assigned, to include:
- Manage safety data sheets – production and lab
- Control incoming experimental materials
- Environmental compliance – reach, ROHS, conflict minerals, PROP 65
- Manage IMDS system/submissions
- Maintain rubber and urethane quoting guides
- Consult with subsidiary company on material related issues
- Cost reduction projects with sourcing

Job Requirements
Technical Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Materials Science and Engineering
- 3-5 years industrial experience with rubber and/or urethane materials, including a thorough understanding of ASTM D2000 standards, testing procedures and equipment. Rubber formulation experience desired
- Ability to run, or learn to run, Lab Mill
