Lab & Quality Supervisor

The Lab & Quality Supervisor will have the following responsibilities:

Safety, Health, and Environmental Compliance

  • Ensure laboratory compliance with safety and environmental standards and regulations
  • Administer all laboratory and hygiene regulatory reporting protocols to meet deadlines provided in regulations and permits
  • Champion Lab Housekeeping for direct reports
  • Administer a safety program for lab specific issues
  • Annually certify lab procedures per environmental regulations
  • Plan and implement plant industrial hygiene monitoring program with Safety and Security Manager
  • Utilize MOC system for lab and lab method modifications

Quality Assurance / Product Quality Monitoring

  • Supervising directly or indirectly the operation of the plant laboratories
  • Scheduling analytical work to address the needs of production process and product distribution
  • Development and maintenance of plant analytical methods
  • Specify equipment and materials for environmental and lab processes to ensure reliability
  • Monitor lab and environmental monitoring equipment reliability to determine optimum life through PM’s
  • Manage lab equipment calibration for critical equipment per ISO standards and environmental compliance
  • Maintain Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) for Plant
  • Serve as Quality Assurance Coordinator for Plant ISO 9001 2015 compliance
  • Technical support for customers, Logistics/Plant Services, customer service and sales group on the safe use, handling, transportation and disposition of chlor-alkali products supplied by company to assure customer satisfaction, limit risk and liability. The position evaluates and resolves customer complaints, issues and problems related to the delivery, use and performance of products to mutual satisfaction and in a way that prevents recurrence of the problem
  • Co-ordinates with the Corporate Logistics Compliance Department on customer education of Responsible Care Product Stewardship related to environment and health risk associated with the frequencies based on level of risk and impact at customer facilities
  • Populates and maintains customer specifications within the EPMS system
  • Supports customers’ needs by analyzing Customer Opportunity Reports that are generated against the Chlor-alkali division and report metrics to the chlor-alkali unit.

Effective/Efficient Communication

  • Communicate between laboratory and operations group to bridge knowledge / experiences
  • Facilitate lab support for process problem troubleshooting & secure necessary resources

Supervise/Coordinate the following:

  • External Laboratory service support
  • Use of Third Party Laboratories and R&D Lab services
  • Maintenance and Reagents supply and equipment availability in all labs

Cost Budgeting and Management

  • Annual budgeting for Laboratories and Quality systems
  • Monthly Reporting and Metrics (cost variance, regulatory reporting, etc.)
  • Communication with laboratory staff, on goals and results

Leadership

  • Support coaching and development for lab personnel, having 4 direct reports
  • Manage employee work restrictions or disability
  • Respond to employee concerns (EH&S, policy, technical, etc.)

Requirements:

  • BS/MS Degree in Chemistry or related
  • Analytical Chemistry experience in industry is required. Analytical instrumentation in ICP is very desirable as well as titration.  Other useful instrumentation is HPLC, AA, IC, GC
  • 6 or more years of industry experience
  • Experience in management which could include direct reports, performance reviews, and coaching people
  • Someone with inorganic chemistry and inorganic process experience would be a good fit. Paper Science or water treatment experience would be transferrable, or maybe pharma or food.  Boiler feedwater or cooling water treatment experience would be of interest.  Petroleum industry experience is not relevant
  • Experience with brine treatment or electrolysis experience is helpful
  • Experience troubleshooting analytical equipment is useful
  • Experience handling a budget and strategic planning is desirable. All of their lab equipment is around the same age and the lab will need a purchasing plan to maintain production.  This person will manage half a million dollars worth of expenses and will oversee 1 million worth of lab equipment
  • Must enjoy problem solving
  • Teaching and coaching mentality
  • Ability to maintain open lines of communication between lab technicians and operations personnel
  • Ability to communicate with tech service as well as customers
  • High regard for compliance and safety
  • Innovative and forward-thinking. This laboratory needs leadership and someone who can form plans to keep up with new technologies and find new ways to increase efficiency, as well as reduce costs
