Job Description
The Senior Savory Application Technologist is a seasoned professional tasked with driving the development and refinement of savory food products. This position calls for deep technical knowledge, strategic insight, and strong leadership abilities.
Job Requirements
Responsibilities:
- Lead the development and optimization of savory product formulations using a range of flavor delivery systems
- Reverse engineer products based on ingredient statements and nutritional labels
- Apply strong knowledge of batching, processing, and formulation techniques to product development
- Create recipes that incorporate new technologies, flavor trends, and innovative product concepts
- Design and execute shelf-life and stability testing protocols
- Provide technical support for internal teams and external partners during demos, trials, and production runs
- Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient lab environment
- Participate in sensory evaluations and taste panels
- Stay current on ingredient innovations, flavor trends, and industry standards
- Collaborate cross-functionally with R&D, commercial, and marketing teams to deliver product solutions
- Support customer engagement through presentations, demos, and occasional on-site visits
- Understand project goals and align development work with business and customer needs
- Independently manage projects from concept through completion, including planning and analysis
- Solve technical challenges using data-driven insights and research
- Track and evaluate project results to inform future development
- Mentor and support junior team members and technicians
- Travel up to 30% domestically for customer visits, plant trials, and industry events
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Food Science or a related applied science field
- Minimum of 7 years of experience in application labs, focused on savory product development or a similar area
- At least 4 years of experience across two or more areas such as meat applications, dairy and dairy alternatives, plant-based products, seasoning blends, proteins, dips, sauces, or dressings
- Experience with retort processing of savory products preferred
- Background supporting plant trials and commercialization efforts preferred
- Advanced knowledge of food preparation methods, mixing/blending techniques, and flavor systems
- Ability to reverse engineer formulations and interpret ingredient statements and nutritional data
- Strong documentation and organizational skills, with proficiency in tools such as Excel and Word
- Capable of managing multiple complex projects with accuracy and efficiency
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Strong presentation abilities
- Demonstrated leadership and mentoring experience
