Material Science Chemist

The Material Science Chemist focuses on the development and execution of materials characterization methods that enable the design of coatings with exceptional application and cured film performance.  The successful candidate for this position will have experience in creating and executing analytical and materials characterization projects, developing methodologies, and working collaboratively with key stakeholders.  Responsibilities include the characterization of formulations and products to expand scientific understanding of coating performance which leads to accelerated new product development or the resolution of problem investigations.  This position reports to the Analytical Services Technical Manager. 

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS:

  • Create and execute materials characterization methodologies that add value or solve problems for their internal and external customers. Clearly articulate results and plans to the technical teams in the context of their projects
  • Develop capabilities and formulation guidelines to enable the design of coatings with exceptional application and cured film performance
  • Respond to highly technical and complex questions and concerns from customers, research professionals, quality control, and other internal and external parties regarding development and related programs and services. Presents results and plans to internal and external customers
  • Utilizes other analytical techniques and data to thoroughly address internal and external customer problems
  • Reads and interprets patents, examines new product concepts and technology, and determines how to meet customer needs and market demands

Requirements:

  • Required: BS Chemistry or related science and two semesters of General and 2 Semesters of Organic Chemistry.
  • Preferred: Master’s Degree or higher in a Science related area
  • Required: 3 years of laboratory or industrial coating experience
  • Track record of creating and applying physical characterization methods to product development and problem solving
  • Preferred: Expertise in mechanical performance (e.g. DMA) and rheology
  • Experience with thermal analytical techniques (DSC, TGA, FTIR, etc.)
  • Experience with surface characterization techniques (AFM, SEM, etc.)
  • Track record of creating and applying physical characterization methods to product development and problem solving
  • Applying project management principles and practices
  • Interpreting and applying department policies and procedures and applicable laws, rules, and regulations
  • Applying comprehensive application methods and procedures
  • Interpreting data and developing reports
  • Communicating technical information
  • Reading and interpreting patents
  • PC skills; Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook); and other applicable applications
  • Communicating with co-workers to provide and receive direction
