Microbiology – Food Safety Scientist

The Microbiology – Food Safety Scientist will have the following responsibilities:

  • Identify and characterize microbiological hazards related to company products
  • Assess microbiological risks
  • Deliver quantitative and qualitative risk assessments (QMRA) on DNA products
  • Set up standards, define microbiological criterions including safety and hygiene / process criteria with relevant sampling plans and help to implement relevant hygienic criteria
  • Contribute to mitigation / control of microbiological risks through advice, guidelines, tools and coordinating / organizing microbial challenge studies
  • Contribute to the implementation of recognized procedures and processes in the field of risk assessment and risk management
  • Develop statistical approaches, probabilistic models and predictive microbiology in risk assessment and promote them in risk management
  • Ensure scientific relevance, permanent and easy access to the body of knowledge related to microbiological hazards and risks
  • Draft FS standards, scientific documents (positions, fact sheets, …)
  • Troubleshoot food safety challenges related to microbial hazards
  • Identify and participate to relevant ad hoc scientific working groups
  • Manage key expert contacts and representatives in scientific organizations, official bodies, professional associations
  • Contribute to drafting of FS corporate documents in its area of competencies

  • PhD degree
  • 5+ years Plant QA / Sanitation / Food Safety or manufacturing experience
  • Strong and broad background in applied food microbiology, bacterial physiology, pathogenic germs, environmental contaminations, spoilage contaminants
  • Strong competencies and experience in food safety and microbiology required
  • Experience with FS management systems, quality assurance systems, HACCP and FSMA, PCQI preferred
  • Strong competencies in predictive microbiology, statistics and probabilistic modeling areas preferred
  • Leadership skills / project management skills
  • Communication skills (written & oral)
  • Literary research and laboratory research skills to use web search and scientific databases for bibliographic research and scientific monitoring
  • Independent worker with ability to work with groups / coordinate group activities
  • Ability to make science understandable and well connected to business needs
  • Experience in leading projects in a complex environment
  • Ability to follow science, but focus on the application
