Nanomaterials Scientist

The Nanomaterial Scientist will have the following responsibilities:

  • Lead innovation scientist will be responsible for leading research projects for identifying, designing and developing new materials / nanomaterials for various applications. Works within the current laboratory structure to develop new materials and methods.  Interfaces with internal and external technical resources to conduct and direct research related to new materials and new applications of existing materials.  Communicates goals and achievements in fields that are entirely new to company.
  • Lead innovation scientist needs to have an excellent technical knowledge of nanomaterials and their applications. Ability to interact with subject matter experts from different fields to move research project forward.  Provide technical support to other scientist and chemist in evaluating different materials and ideas
  • Lead internal and external research projects
  • Initiate and lead research projects
  • Support research project from conception to commercialization
  • Perform and supervise laboratory work
  • Assign and coordinate tasks for project team
  • Monitor task completion according to project plan
  • Lead effort to enhance laboratory research capabilities
  • Develop screening techniques (New test capabilities, procedure, Nondestructive material analysis). Develop structure-property relationship for different nanomaterial system and knowledge of processing and material handling effect
  • Manage Innovation Pipeline
  • Identify, prioritize, establish and maintain relationships with external academic and supply-side partners. Assist with Open Innovation and Crowdsourcing efforts.  Provide regular estimations of economic model of innovation programs and increase overall value potential of portfolio by continually upgrading pipeline
  • Project Management & Leadership
  • Manage MI-ND PM resource(s).
  • Ensure PM system is up-to-date
  • Identify and implement improvements as necessary
  • Manage Intellectual Property (IP)
  • Manage New Domains IP strategy and portfolio
  • Develop training materials and provide training to internal and external parties
  • Collect and develop scientific insight and convert them into training manuals. Conduct regular training session for internal and external parties

Requirements:

  • PhD Polymer, Chemistry, Materials Science, Carbon Science or Chemical Engineering with 5 or more years of R&D experience in similar or relate field

SKILL ABILITY:

  • Experience managing research projects on nanomaterials for different application area such as plastics, coating, inks, rubber, composites, etc. Ability to evaluate projects throughout development life cycle and accelerate or kill as needed.  Ability to manage global development strategy working across geographies and functional divisions.  Domestic and International travel required, up to 20%.
  • Polymers/Materials – Thorough knowledge on structure-property-process relationship for all types of polymers. Hands on work experience on developing polyacrylonitrile, Nylon, PET, Polycarbonate, ABS, Polystyrene, and Polypropylene based materials.  Proficiency in activated carbon process, characterization of carbon black, activated carbon and graphite physical properties, dispersion of carbon nanotubes in polymeric matrices, dispersion of carbon blacks, activated carbon and graphite in different matrices.  Expertise in additives development for plastics as well as battery applications
  • Process Methods – Hands on experience in polymer processing techniques (Injection and Extrusion processes), metal process methods (Casting, Cast-Roll-punch) and battery manufacturing processes – paste formulation and mixing techniques, application, curing & formation
  • Nano Technology – Expertise in PAN/CNT, PP/CNT, phenolic resin/CNT composites, electrospinning process, nano fiber/material characterization methods, dispersion of CNTs in various matrices
  • Material Characterization – Imaging techniques – SEM, TEM, Metallography, Optical Microscopy, Mechanical Testing – Instron, DMA, Thermal analysis – TGA, DSC, Rheological properties – Rheometer, MFR, Capillary flow Materials composition analysis – ICP, ESPEC, WAXD, EPS, FTIR, C&S analyzer, Surface Area and Porosity Analyzer, density measurement techniques and wet chemistry methods. Other plastics characterization tests – chemical / weather resistance, flammability, electrical testing, optical measurement – color, haze, gloss, abrasion test, durometer, contact angle
  • To be successful in this role, the candidate must be well organized, detail oriented, self-motivated, and a team player. Being able to lead by example and effectively communicate technical information by means understandable to all levels of the Specialty Blacks organization is a must.  Ability to work with multiple cultures and national origins.  Must have experience leading projects across cross-functional teams.
