Job Description

New Business / Applications Development Chemist

Will be responsible for leading and identifying new potential business opportunities, evaluating existing company products, identifying new potential products, talking with customers for all of the coating resins, including Polyurethane, and Polyurethane dispersions, acrylics, and solution acrylics, alkyds, polyesters, epoxies, and curing agents.  Hands on at the bench in the lab occasionally to do competitive testing, liaison with synthesis teams, Marketing and Sales teams, travel will be able 30-40% domestic, maybe more in new product launches and delivering novel technology to customers.

  • Responsible for assisting the Business Development Manager in developing a strategic plan to manage the coatings product line by identifying which products are to be replaced and/or upgraded, and which new products or product categories are to be developed
  • Interfaced between company and the R&D and Marketing functions of our customers
  • Help foster a business culture that is customer focused, results oriented and forward thinking

Scope

  • Member of the Coatings R&D Team
  • Alkyd, Polyester, Urethane, and Epoxy coating resin lines
  • Assists with the planning, organizing, and tracking of new product development projects from concept to commercialization
  • Helps to ensure continuous product enhancement
  • Proposes and conducts competitive analysis
  • Builds strategic relationships with customer R&D and Marketing functions

Principle Responsibilities:

  • Recommends a sustainable pipeline of commercially and technically viable products and product technologies for the coatings industry
  • Works with internal and external stakeholders to identify key customers in various sectors by market and by technology
  • Develops healthy relationships with people responsible for R&D and Marketing at coatings customers
  • Works with R&D and Marketing functions of key customers to identify new product development opportunities
  • Works with sales and customers to determine whether current products are fulfilling all the needs of our customers and the broader market
  • Explores alternate markets where existing coatings technologies could be used and build a business case for potential projects to expand sales
  • Assists the Business Development Manager in identifying emerging product or application technologies
  • Involves key customers in the conceptual design of new products
  • Assists the Business Development Manager in ensuring that new opportunities are still valid and of interest to customers
  • Introduces customers to trial prototype technologies and assists them in their evaluation
  • Develops launch strategy and materials to communicate to market(s), customers and internal sales
  • Assists Account Managers with new product launches and promotion in the marketplace
  • Assists customers with technical questions or formulation issues that may arise after new product launches to facilitate project success and resulting new sales
  • Introduces the Company’s strengths in both products and services to current and potential customers
  • Develops sales tools and training to support current and new products
  • Organizes, updates, and improves current product literature
  • Conducts SWOT analysis to identify opportunities and threats from competitors to current company products
  • Benchmarks products against other products and technologies
  • Collects market intelligence on competitive position and competitive pricing
  • Helps track and report success rate of new product launches in the marketplace
  • Drives to completion market or strategic customer projects assigned by the Business Development Manager

Job Requirements

Requirements:

  • BS/MS Chemist
  • Experience in making industrial coatings as well as having worked for a raw material supplier and taken new products out to customers to help in how they formulate them – 10+ years required
  • Trade Show presentations
  • The main push behind this role is to help create and launch new technologies from the Innovations Group (Synthesis team), and to provide the Voice of the Customer to the team. After a couple of years, there will be opportunity to move into a Technical Service lead role…
