Optical Materials R&D Leader

You will be the Optical Materials R&D Leader for the development and delivery of key technologies needed for our novel near-eye display product solutions:

  • Glass materials and a variety of glass product configurations
  • Optical polymer materials and application of them in a variety of product configurations
  • Optical substrate and component configurations
  • Inorganic and organic coatings on a variety of substrate materials
  • Optical modeling of component-level performance of devices incorporating the above solutions
  • Metrology systems and procedures to quantify product-relevant performance
  • Reliability of near-eye display products and component technologies
  • Benchmarking performance of competitive systems and alternative technologies

You will also lead technical customer engagements for our existing customers in collaboration with commercial counterparts including:

  • Provide needed technical expertise on our products and technology solutions
  • Deep understanding of customer requirements and translating these requirements to product specifications and performance attributes
  • Supporting customer requested product testing and product troubleshooting
  • Deep understanding of Customer roadmap and integrating into business technology roadmap and PGA product line plans
  • Transfer of new products and processes to engineering / manufacturing and receiving new technologies from research
  • Overall technical program management of multiple, parallel development work-steams and multi-discipline technical teams with budget and resource responsibility

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Leadership and execution of technology development programs and projects
  • Hands-on technical work as necessary in support of development programs and projects
  • Establish deep understanding of Augmented Reality ecosystem, including markets, products, and technology leaders
  • Develop product and technology roadmaps near-eye display technology roadmap; identify how company Precision Glass Solutions capabilities can address emerging needed related AR/MR
  • Develop extensive network across the industry; Initiate and drive external technical partnerships
  • Customer engagements with commercial counterparts
  • Required interactions with research, development, engineering and operations
  • IP portfolio and strategy to support technology development
  • Develop and maintain Competitive technology landscape and assessment
  • Budget/spending management
  • Domestic and some international travel required (25% routine, up to 50% at times to support customer integration of company technologies

Requirements:

  • Master’s or Ph.D. required, in material science or related field (such as chemistry) or optical science / engineering with a materials emphasis
  • At least 10 years or more of industrial R&D experience with at least 3 years of technology leadership and management experience
  • Deep knowledge of and experience working with optical materials, materials processing and their use in novel optical components and systems
  • Deep knowledge of and experience working with a variety of optical material disciplines including optical glasses and polymers
  • Demonstrated technology development leadership, execution, delivery, and management experience
  • Ability to identify the critical path on complex and convoluted initiatives
  • Experience in leading multi-functional and diverse technology teams
  • Demonstrated ability to do hands-on technical work; willing and able to lead modeling and experimental problem solving and troubleshooting by example
  • Demonstrated experience in working with customers to define customer needs/requirements, translation of those to product specifications and attributes, and providing customer product support
  • Demonstrated experience leading customers through technology trade-off and implementation decisions resulting in launched consumer electronics products

  • Experience interacting with international customers/partners
  • Experience managing across and interacting with multi-site/multi-organization teams
  • Knowledge of and experience with near-eye displays
  • FMEA and MEE expertise and experience
