PhD Organic Chemist (x2)

The scope of this position is to develop high performance materials based on both thermoset and thermoplastic chemistry for the Advanced Materials business.  This position entails new polymeric material discovery and exploring new synthetic processes, modifying existing synthetic processes, performing and understanding material properties as they relate to structural performance in the field of advance composite systems

  • Plans and conduct research to develop new generation high performance materials utilized in the field of polymer matrix composite (PMC)
  • Generate original and innovative ideas and solutions to PMC synthesis problems
  • Generates options and alternatives that encourage different and unique ways of looking at things
  • Ability to logically break down material problems into their essential elements and develop solutions through novel monomer and polymer synthesis
  • Modify existing thermoset materials to improve their cost / performance characteristics
  • Communicate research results to stakeholders through reports and presentations
  • Create and protect intellectual property for the company. There are about 35 chemists in the R&D group

What will be expected from you?

  • Interacting with marketing and technical service, engage customers to define unmet needs and product profile
  • Develop work hypothesis, design experiments, and develop experiment plan to validate value propositions
  • Work closely with process research to ensure successful scale up of new products in the plant
  • Institute rigorous stage gate process and project management to identify and mitigate risks in early stages of product development
  • Thoroughly document findings and leverage learning from the global technical community to minimize development effort
  • Conduct literature search and patent monitoring to understand industry and technology trends

  • PhD in Organic Chemistry with 2-8 years’ experience
  • Extensive hands-on experience in organic/polymer synthesis and material characterization
  • Strong understanding of chemical reactivity and material structure-property relationship
  • The individual must be able to access ITAR information
  • Strong understanding of polymer chemistry and organic molecular synthesis
  • Good knowledge of material structural property relationships
  • Thermoset resin synthesis, processing, properties and applications
  • Hands on experience and interpretation knowledge on analytical equipment such as DSC, DMA, TGA, HPLC, NMR, FTIR, etc.
  • Application knowledge of epoxy resins and amine chemistries that are used in industrial applications including composites, adhesives, coatings and construction applications is a plus
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills to work in a team environment
  • Must have a good level of proficiency with Internet, Email, and Microsoft programs
  • Understands, supports and conforms to company policies and processes. Integrates policies and processes into projects
  • Utilizes project management skills, knowledge of manufacturing, business, and internal / external customers to independently plan and direct the aspects of their project area
  • Works independently. Successfully completes projects on time and with resources available through on mutually agreed upon ideas and goals
  • Effectively uses feedback. Accomplished in thorough, concise and timely oral and written communication.  Actively contributes as a team member
