PhD Process Chemist

This position is responsible for the development and optimization of processes used to manufacture specialty organic/inorganic chemicals.  This person must develop safe, environmentally responsible and economically viable processes.  Establish basis for scale up as well as help improve existing processes.  Must help establish safe parameters of operation using tools provided and provide technical expertise during pilots and scale-up campaigns.  Ability to interact with internal and external customers.

Major responsibilities and accountabilities:

Supervise up to 2 technicians on an on-going basis.  Perform all activities in the lab and plant setting safely.  Develop documentation for economic evaluations.  This should include all data needed for a safe transition from laboratory to plant scale.  This includes but is not limited to analytical data, reaction data, safety data and thermal data for ease of transition to plant scale.  Must develop proficiency in running reaction calorimetry experiments and interpretation of data associated with reaction kinetics.  Participate in Haz-op for new processes.  Be a liaison with customers and our internal marketing group for developing and implementing new products.

Essential functional duties of the position:

Set-up and run reactions to verify customer technical packages, perform discovery work, and provide procedures for the implementation of new products.  Begin to help guide technicians on specific projects.  Develop and help implement process improvements for existing product.  Run reaction calorimetry experiments and begin to interpret data to help engineers size cooling and heating needs for the plant.  Determine stability data and material and reactions using provided instrumentation and equipment.  (DSC, TGA, RC-1).  Ability to meet deadlines.

  • PhD Organic Chemistry and 3+ years of industry experience. Has to be someone that has worked in a plant environment involved with process development, scale-up, production support, etc.
  • They are looking for someone out of specialty organic chemical manufacturing
  • Some analytical experience is preferred, this person will use GC, HPLC, DSC, TGA and ICP instruments from time-to-time
  • Good organic synthesis background
  • Ability to improve existing processes
  • Hands-on! This person will be going between the lab and the plant and will need to get his or her hands dirty
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Leadership skills! Will oversee the day-to-day activities of lab technicians
  • Ideally, this person would be someone promotable
