Polymer Chemist
This position is a hands-on role within an industrial R&D polymer and organic chemistry laboratory. Role entails setting up equipment and conducting experiments under established procedures and in compliance with safety policies and best practices, documenting and analyzing results, and maintaining the laboratory.
Key Activities and Responsibilities:
- Strong focus on application testing for polymer, organic, and inorganic materials by standard procedures (e.g., ASTM). Scope includes polymer additives, curing agents, coatings, sealants, and adhesives
- Strong focus on polymerization & organic synthesis (air sensitive and high-pressure reactions), purification, and characterization
- Operating, interpreting results from, and managing routine maintenance of related analytical techniques such as gas chromatography (GC), infrared spectroscopy (IR), and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)
- Safely handles hazardous materials, or materials of unknown hazards, using good laboratory practices
- Generates and documents results to support research projects, patent applications, technical service requests, plant support requests, technical literature, etc.
- Works with team to invent new products, applications, and processes in their area of expertise and assists in their commercialization
- Serves as resource for functions outside R&D. Partner for supply chain/sourcing and can lead technical aspects of second source project and/or perform experiments to resolve raw material problems
Context and Environment:
- Full participant within industrial polymer and organic synthesis laboratory, supporting a wide range of projects related to plant support, new application development, and new product development
- Member of diverse Thiochemicals R&D team, able to work with researchers with different technical backgrounds and in very collaborative mode
- Active member of broader R&D function, collaborating, as needed, with researchers from across the company’s business units and corporate team
- Supports the sites HES policy and compiles with all regulatory and internal requirements
- Participates in HES activities provided by site management and company (e.g., Behavioral Base Safety, SafeStart, etc.)
- Supports and promotes the reporting of all health, safety, environmental, near-miss, accident or injury accident

Job Requirements
Technical Qualifications:
- BS degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or other related technical field with 2+ years of relevant industrial experience, OR MS degree of related technical experience
- Direct experience of design, construction, and operation of chemical process with ability to support equipment and design, modifications, assembly, calibration and maintenance (Distillations) communication programs
- Experience in safe handling of high hazard materials and processes
