Polymer Scientist

The scope of the position will include:

  • As the materials development scientist, candidate will be responsible for applying knowledge / principles for developing and testing adhesives, epoxies, encapsulants, sealing, polyurethane materials for optical communications systems such as connectors, closures, cabinets, assemblies, adhesives, and seals
  • The candidate will work as part of a project team, where he/she will be responsible for the completion of a subset of project objectives. He/she will work in a cross-functional team and is expected to be a strong team player
  • The work will entail developing new test protocols for offline testing to correlate properties to physical and chemical attributes. Identify product performance requirements in end-use applications and relating them to fundamental materials properties.  Development and testing of existing commercial and new polymer materials optical fiber, cable and connectivity solutions
  • Candidate must possess experience and strong understanding of chemical, physical & environmental testing of adhesives, epoxies and sealants for product design and development
  • The candidate will analyze the experimental data toward materials development, characterization and testing. The candidate will be responsible for communicating to the team the conclusions and recommendations based on the analysis.  Candidate is expected to demonstrate strong analytical and problem-solving along with good project management skills

Day-to-Day Responsibilities:

  • Candidate will demonstrate technical leadership with scouting new technologies for developing processes for polymer materials that enable material options with lower cost and improved product attributes for sealing and encapsulant materials
  • The person will contribute to projects entailing development of new products, evaluation of new raw materials and test methods, and investigation of the effect of processing conditions on product attributes
  • Identify and develop processes and polymer materials that enable material options solutions with lower cost and improved product attributes
  • Initiate and develop ideas for product and/or application development opportunities, along with conducting development work to demonstrate technical and commercial feasibility
  • Lead or support industrialization/feasibility trials at the manufacturing plants for scale-up of new / improved polymer technologies and product meeting the desired performance requirements
  • Balance hands-on work-related activities with technical leadership
  • Collaborations with members of immediate team as well as teams within groups globally
  • Interface with the material suppliers and procurement to bring on new materials for evaluations, troubleshooting problems and identifying opportunities for cost reductions with existing materials
  • Conduct research, propose and execute experiments and analyze data to test hypotheses to enhance development and understanding of coating products and processes
  • Provide leadership in problem solving through comprehensive fundamental understanding of material behavior, advanced technical knowledge, data, modeling, and statistical tools to improve material performance
  • Interface with Research, Development, Engineering and Operations group to ensure process requirements are understood and integrated to meet product requirements and division objectives
  • Prepare process and technology transfer documentation. Very actively file IP and write Internal Reports
  • Travel Requirements: Up to 20% travel, primarily in North America & Europe

Requirements:

  • MS/PhD preferred in Polymer Science / Chemistry
  • Understanding of polymer chemistry and physics – not a mixologist
  • 5-6 years of industry experience formulating and characterizing thermoplastic polyurethane adhesives, sealants, or encapsulants
  • Experience working with epoxy, polyurethane, silicones, polyolefin polymer systems preferred
  • Strong training in the field of polymer science / engineering, materials testing and characterization, adhesion mechanics of polymeric materials to itself and other materials
  • Strong background in structure-property relationships of polymeric materials along with excellent knowledge of applied polymer physics principles
  • Hands-on experience with analytical techniques related to polymer characterization such as SEM, TMA, DSC, DMA, TGA, rheology, mechanical testing, etc.
  • Experience with polymers application development. Determining Critical To Quality (CTQ) material properties and relevance to a particular application.  Application of materials properties for identifying failure mechanisms and red flag tests
  • A good “experimenter”. Grasps core concepts and can come up with lab-scale demos to prove feasibility in manufacturing.  Able to carefully craft experiments to arrive at correct technical conclusions
  • Familiarity with thermoplastic and specialty engineered plastics polymer processing equipment such as extrusion, pultrusion and injection molding
  • Experience with delivering technology to manufacturing
  • Excellent project leadership, verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent hands-on experimentation, project leadership and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work in team environment and work closely with scientists / engineers / technicians from diverse technical background
  • Strong communication skills along with effective presentation and technical writing skills
  • Ability to work within a team environment
  • Ability to work independently and lead technical work. Project management experience is required
  • Effective time management and handling multiple priorities
