Job Description

Large Coatings Manufacturer has opened new center of innovation and excellence.   

The Product Development Chemist must be a solutions-driven individual with hands-on technical skills. Extensive experience and expertise in formulation testing and quality control which includes the use of universal testing systems (Instron), titrators, viscometers, analytical balances, etc. Must have knowledge of polyurethane/polyurea raw materials and the understanding of formulation analysis. Continuous communication with manufacturing, sales, and technical divisions is required. 

    • Research targeted application requirements and apply critical polyurethane/polyurea formulation expertise to develop or improve existing performance characteristics to meet or exceed customer expectations
    • Interact with raw material suppliers and other technical resources to stay abreast of the latest technologies and application techniques
    • Utilize defined Stage Gate PD process to efficiently expedite the product innovation to launch process
    • PD will provide feasibility, formulation, testing, raw material availability, budget guidance, scale up recommendations, and application assistance as project evolves to ensure product performance meets customer expectations
    • Will work closely with the business team to develop the Business Case and to help prioritize commercialization activities
    • Maintain accurate ISO 17025 qualified quality records for laboratory projects
    • Provide technical support to sales, Tech Services, manufacturing, customer networks to ensure customer satisfaction goals are met
    • Mentor, and train Product Development Associates with their understanding of polyurethane/polyurea formulating principles and laboratory techniques.

Job Requirements

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry/Materials Science
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in product development and/or research and development
  • Experience and expertise in sample testing and quality control which includes knowledge of elastomers, resin and isocyanate and related physical tests according to ASTM standards (Titration, gel time, Tensile Strength, Tabor abrasion, Adhesion)
  • 2-3 years of mentoring  technicians or chemists preferred.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office
  • Self Starter who can implement routines and research test methods with minor supervision
  • Strong ability to work in a fast-paced environment and change direction quickly dependent on tasks
  • Strong communication and team work skills
  • Proven ability to take initiative
