Process Analytical Scientist R&D

The Process Analytical Scientist will join a cross-functional team that is involved in analysis for fermentation, synthetic biology, fuels and chemicals.  Key activities for this position include research, design, development, testing and implementation of at-line and on-line analytical measurement technologies for R&D, scale-up and commercial environments.  This position will report to the Analytical Director and will develop and support analytics across a diverse range of R&D projects as well as provide onsite process analytical support for pilot, demonstration and commercial operations.  The individual selected must demonstrate a depth and breadth of knowledge in chromatography, spectroscopy and data analysis in both applications and hardware as applied to process chemistry, fermentation and chemical/fuels characterization. 

Specific Job Function:

  • Identify, develop and implement online and at line real time in situ sensor and process analyses for fermentation gases, broth, biomass, fuels, and chemicals, which directly contribute to improved process measurement and control
  • Actively participate in commercial, scale-up field testing, operation and validation of sensors and process analyzers
  • Project lead for implementing analytical solutions in plant environments
  • Work with R&D and engineering to ensure proper analytical process control features and methodologies are implemented and easy to use
  • Investigate and benchmark worldwide best methodologies
  • Participate in globally located multi-disciplinary projects to deliver high quality, timely, analytical data to solve complex problems through interacting with molecular biologists, fermentation scientists and engineers both within company and onsite at commercial business partner and customer locations
  • Perform online and offline GC, HPLC and spectroscopic analyses on a variety of sample types for a diverse set of R&D applications related to company proprietary technology
  • At company customer and partner sites, setup and operate specialty-testing equipment, interface with external laboratories and provide training and guidance to internal and external customers in the operation and maintenance of analytical methods used at site
  • Adapt, develop and document new methods for utilization for these measurement systems, as well as ongoing maintenance and calibration
  • Conduct feasibility experiments as needed to ensure the most appropriate analytical techniques are implemented to support program requirements
  • Drive continuous improvement in methods to improve accuracy, throughput and reduce hands on time, investigate and benchmark worldwide best methodologies
  • Understand R&D project analytical needs, interpret complex scientific data, and clearly communicate results to diverse stakeholders

Job Requirements


  • PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or related physical science or equivalent industry relevant experience
  • For a PhD, 5 years of direct hands on experience in both HPLC and GC analysis and method development as well process analytical experience preferably in an industrial research environment related to biotechnology, chemicals, oil and gas, or renewable energy
  • For a MS Degree, 8 years required experience, with a BS Degree, 10 years of required experience per above
  • Expertise and fundamental understanding of other spectroscopic and chromatographic methods such as IR, fluorescence, Raman, UV/VIS and NMR
  • Possess excellent skills for mechanical and electronic instrumentation adaption and repair as well statistical data interpretation
  • Experience with optimizing and troubleshooting the interface between the process being measured and the analytical analysis of the process (analytical sampling, impact of process variables on the analysis, analytical process integration, and data reporting)
  • Have varied educational or industry lab experienced, enabling the development of new and creative approaches to difficult problems
  • Ability to work on multiple and simultaneous projects as part of a team in a global, fast-paced, entrepreneurial setting where priorities may change quickly
  • Able to interface and effectively communicate with co-workers and customers from diverse backgrounds and educational levels
  • Capable of independently developing and troubleshooting analytical methods
  • Excellent analytical problem-solving skills
  • Adaptable team player that thrives in a cutting edge, fast paced, entrepreneurial environment where priorities can change quickly
  • Strong experience in chromatography data systems, data transfer and MS Office
  • Able to travel nationally and internally up to 40% as needed

Highly Preferred

  • Graduate degree in Analytical Chemistry
  • Method development preferably in an industrial analytical research environment related to biotechnology, chemicals, oil and gas or renewable energy
  • Experience with a wide range of analytical techniques beyond HPLC and GC including ICP, IC, spectroscopic techniques and titrations
  • Experience in ASTM or EN fuel characterization methods
  • Knowledge of fermentation, food, alcoholic beverage, flavors or fragrance testing
  • Demonstrated hands on experience with process and automation hardware and software and statistics
  • Experience with industrial safety practices such as OSHA, PSM, etc.
