Product Development Scientist

This Scientist position reports to the Low-acid beverage development team.  This team is responsible for developing dairy-based and alternative protein beverages and liquids including but not limited to protein drinks, energy drinks, dairy beverages, creamers, liquids, syrups and concentrates.  The Scientist will be working on beverage and liquid formulations and scale-up that utilize aseptic processing into various packaging systems.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Work onsite in the lab on multiple product formats to formulate high quality products for customers
  • Responsibilities include innovation, design, planning, and execution on multiple projects
  • Interact with customers on a regular basis to provide presentations, insights, and updates and remain engaged beginning to end on projects
  • Batch and prepare formulas for processing the in the Pilot Plant, with an in-depth working knowledge of plant processing equipment
  • Provide technical support for varying complexity / risk product trials
  • Knowledge in beverage / liquid formulation and analytical testing including:
    • Brix (can you define Brix and calculate it to receive reading required?)
    • pH
    • Titratable acidity (can you take sample and titrate it with alkaline solution?)
    • Total solids/moisture
    • Particle size
    • Density, viscosity, color
  • Monitor progress of shelf life for given projects through data analysis and synthesis into comprehensive technical reports
  • Execute other duties as assigned within established SOPs and participate in SOP revision, optimization, and creation with other stakeholders

Job Requirements

Technical Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in food science or related field
  • Beverage development highly desirable
  • 3-5 years highly preferred in a food and beverage technical position. This is a mid-level role and formulation to commercialization is required
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook, Excel, SharePoint, and Word
  • Skilled in data synthesis and technical writing / communication
  • Collaborative and team-oriented mindset and detailed work style
  • Proficiency in self-management and prioritization skills to meet customer and business needs
  • Comfortable with a brisk working pace and environment of changing priorities
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position 505 of the time

Requirements Of This Position:

  • Ability to apply critical thinking, food science and business principles to work through complex, challenging scenarios at bench, pilot, and commercial scales. Leverage internal and external resources for troubleshooting and root cause analysis
  • Ability to collaborate with flavor team, sales, project managers, lab technicians, process engineers, etc. to achieve goals
  • Ability to drive progress and deliver results o multiple priorities, projects, and timelines concurrently
  • Follow all Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) guidelines and assist in enforcing policies throughout the organization
  • This role may require travel to manufacturing plants (<20%)
  • Participate in training and onboarding initiatives as needed and lead training for any direct reports
