SUMMARY

The Production Engineer provides daily operations support to the manufacturing units that affect plant productivity, product quality, plant safety and environmental performance. Will routinely review manufacturing data, cycle times, product quality parameters and pertinent environmental data to determine compliance with set process controls. Deviations from standard conditions will be discussed with the Team Leader and corrective action taken. The Production Engineer will identify capital projects for implementation that will resolve chronic operating problems & improve the unit's performance (throughput, process capability, energy efficiency, etc.)

The Production Engineer will also act as a champion for advancing process improvement in the area. Will help implement changes in the process that eliminate special causes that create variability in the process and engage in activities that improve process capability. Will identify opportunities in the process where capital improvements are necessary and solicit assistance from the engineering department, as necessary, to implement these improvements. The Production Engineer will also participate in process improvement efforts focusing on streamlining and optimizing targeted products in the area.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Surveys the process area by examining operating data, production quantities, raw material yields and utility usages to ensure budgeted levels are attained
  • Resolves technical operating problems to minimize process costs and unit downtime
  • Coordinates and evaluates product development and process improvement experimental runs which are geared at evaluating new technology, improving product quality or optimizing the manufacturing process
  • Develops plans and coordinates activities to improve process capability and works with operations personnel to identify and eliminate common cause variability in the process
  • Provides technical and operational support to the Process Streamlining and Optimization (PSO) improvement team activities for the targeted products in the area
  • Participates in incident investigations and provides technical assistance to the investigation team for action items requiring engineering solutions
  • Participates in process hazard reviews that revalidate the current process design and addresses team recommendations resulting from these reviews
  • Maintains process safety technology documentation in the area as changes are made per the management of change process
  • Performs an engineering assessment for engineering requests and helps to develop the project justification, including determination of a preliminary ROI
  • Participates in capital project teams from the pre feasibility to the implementation project phases and coordinates project construction activities in the assigned production area with the engineering department to ensure a safe, successful and timely project start up
  • Supports the quality improvement process through active participation in the manufacturing quality work groups and contributes to their team goals
  • Monitors equipment performance and offers recommendations to improve its performance based on sound engineering calculations
  • Assists in a backup role to the Team Leader
  • Assists in training of new production team members

REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor of Science, Chemical Engineering
  • Preferred 4+ years of experience in a chemical manufacturing plant
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Solid comprehension of chemical processes and unit operations
  • Ability to facilitate troubleshooting efforts and team meetings
  • Proficient in using Microsoft Office
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills
