R&D Chemist

The R&D Chemist will have the following responsibilities:

  • Re-formulate wood coatings, specifically lacquers, pre-catalyzed lacquers, and conversion varnishes, by modification and improvement of existing formulae
  • Generate new products ideas based on raw material technology in the current marketplace
  • Conduct feasibility studies with direction and document results in the Project Management System with supervision
  • Maintains records of specific projects, including lab notebook and bi-weekly progress reports, in the Project Management System
  • Assists manager in planning process by developing weekly plans of own work
  • Observes and supervise production in process scale-up, suggests process optimizations and observe QC testing. Achieve competency with lab scale-up and equipment
  • Conduct Cost Savings initiatives by formulation or process improvements with supervisor
  • May supervise intern or a Technician I
  • Prepare lab samples and customer trial batches
  • Maintain concise and accurately documented laboratory records
  • Transfer accurate formula records into computer programs
  • Support customer trials
  • Advise and assist production personnel as needed
  • Support production of first time batches as required
  • Conduct performance and quality tests as required
  • Be self-directed with the ability to bring projects to completion with moderate supervision
  • Maintain neat and orderly work area
  • Sound documentation skills and project reporting accountability
  • Travel to customers, conferences, and other facilities, up to 20%

Requirements:

  • BS/MS Degree in Chemistry
  • 2 years or more of industry experience formulating wood coatings or inks
  • Solvent-based wood coatings formulation experience is preferred, followed by water-based wood coatings, then inks
  • Formulation experience from scratch or formula modification experience
  • Acceptable score on Munsel Color Test (generally no greater than 30)
  • Knowledge of and ability to use supplier as information resource
  • Project planning and project management skills
  • Good communication and presentation skills
  • Must be self-motivated
  • Ability to coordinate and contribute to teamwork
  • Ability to use knowledge as a resource for co-workers
  • Ability to accept responsibility for assigned equipment and workstation including maintenance and cleanliness
