Safety Manager

This global organization is looking for a Safety Manager to join their team.  The Safety Manager will report to the Vice President/General Manager for the division and provide safety and occupational health leadership to all departmental areas.  From a strategic business perspective this position must focus on a steadfast commitment planning, implementing, coordinating, and reviewing all safety and occupational health components for all personnel, materials, equipment, and environments to ensure safety regulation compliance and the continued development of a strong safety culture.

The primary focus of the Safety Manager will be the provide strong leadership and technical support by reviewing and updating employee safety programs to determine their compliance with applicable regulations as well as the adequacy and application of safety principles, practices, and techniques in the workplace.  The Safety Manager will coordinate worker training in the areas of occupational safety and health, hazard recognition, and use of safety equipment.  The Safety Manager will implement and oversee a process to ensure all accidents, injuries, and occupational diseases are investigated to determine their causes and the need to implement preventive measures.

The Safety Manager will work closely with the area production, maintenance managers, plant manager, and superintendents to coordinate, manage safety programs, manage projects by assisting in the development of objectives, targets, and reporting procedures consistent with the Division’s vision and strategy.  Strong leadership and clear communication of Division’s strategy and short-term tactical objectives will provide a solid foundation to ensure accountability and understanding by employees at every level.

  • Maintains OSHA compliance with all applicable OSHA and corporate specified safety programs and procedures
  • Stays current with upcoming rules that may affect the facility and advises top management on implementation strategy
  • Conducts safety meetings, audits, and inspections to ensure compliance, evaluate performance, identify corrective action, and implement follow up assessments
  • Provide strong leadership and technical support by reviewing and updating employee safety programs to determine their compliance with applicable regulations as well as the adequacy and application of safety principles, practices, and techniques in the workplace
  • Provides project management team with guidance on health and safety and confirm project site fulfills industry, local, state, and federal guidelines, and regulations
  • Collaborates with management to develop an Emergency Action Plan and serve as primary contact for project site injury and incident notification, investigation, and case management. Maintains a written log of safety inspection activities, reports, and correspondence
  • The ability to conduct interviews, report, and review findings clearly and effectively from accident investigations, facilities inspection, environmental testing, communicable diseases or violation of health and safety regulations
  • Maintain, implement, and oversee a process to ensure all accidents, injuries, and occupational diseases are investigated to determine their causes and the need to implement preventive measures
  • The ability to effectively work with various operating and maintenance groups assuring safety compliance and accountability through auditing, process evaluations, implementation of new requirements, reviews of policies and training
  • Is innovative and seeks new ways to engage the workplace to think and act safely
  • Engages with workforce on the floor 3-4+ hours per day and makes safety presence visible and approachable while conducting inspections, auditing processes, and identifying opportunities for improvement
  • Individual must possess impeccable follow-through skills by utilizing proven techniques to ensure success
  • Schedules and conducts monthly training events and ensures all required training meets the requirements of the standard and the needs of the company
  • Understand and can demonstrate how to conduct thorough accident and near miss investigations to identify root cause and implement corrective action
  • Maintain a Training Safety Program that guarantees the safety of operators in shop floor
  • Oversee the monthly safety training sessions with operations
  • Oversee monthly Safety Inspection Tours of the facility, to maintain a safe environment
  • Reports findings monthly to management & makes sure findings are corrected
  • Provides Safety Evacuation plans and schedules Fire Drills minimum once a year
  • Maintains workforce informed of monthly Corporate Safety Report for awareness
  • Communicates safety incidents or issues from other plants to employees
  • Maintains OSHA Log & fills out preliminary Accident Reports for office Manager file
  • Contributes to maintaining employee motivation & safety through an incentive program

Job Requirements

Technical Qualifications:

An undergraduate degree in safety or related discipline; ASP or CSP certification or at least five years of safety experience in an industrial setting preferred.  Corrugated, Manufacturing experience a plus.

In addition to a full complement of leadership skills, it is also important for the Safety Manager to bring knowledge of OSHA regulations and their application.  Basic knowledge of worker’s compensation case management, production equipment, key performance measurement indicators, basic laws, and regulations at all levels as well as governmental and ISO audit and documentation.  Incorporating continuous improvement processes and best practices will be keys to the success of the Safety Manager.

  • Has credibility to work with other departments to achieve Division’s visions and strategies by motivating, inspiring and gaining commitment for a course of action that achieves results
  • A developer of people who sets an example for others by leading with absolute integrity and strong values. Focusing on training and developing all personnel within the facility.  To compel hourly involvement and engagement as a key aspect of the company culture
  • The ability to effectively work with various operating and maintenance groups assuring safety compliance and accountability through auditing, process evaluations, implementation of new requirements, reviews of policies and training

Communication:

  • Superior written communication skills with the ability to maintain and review records and reports relating to the safety programs to gather information for the development and enforcement of safety activities
  • The ability to conduct interviews, report, and review findings clearly and effectively from accident investigations, facilities inspection, environmental testing, communicable diseases or violation or health and safety regulations
  • Superior verbal skills with the ability to effectively deliver and reinforce consistent messages at all levels within the organization. Conducting safety orientation for new hires or as needed.  Developing, coordinating, and communicating safety training programs for employees

Management:

  • Effectively develop and manage inspections of facilities, machinery, and safety equipment to identify and correct potential hazards and to ensure safety regulation compliance
  • Verify that safety equipment is appropriate and available to employees and monitor their use of such equipment to ensure proper usage
  • Prepare and review specifications and orders for the purchase of safety equipment, ensuring that proper features are present and that items conform to health and safety standards
