Scientist – Analytical

The Scientist – Analytical will provide short and long term research and development support for new and revamped products and/or processes, primarily with analytical chemistry support including instrumental methods.  The scientist will provide an understanding of structure, composition, and properties of new / existing products, as well as take the lead in competitive analysis and quality issues (contamination, root cause analysis) with their QC teams within company.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Use knowledge of analytical chemistry principles to maintain / calibrate equipment, evaluate new techniques, perform basic and new method development, as well as network externally to handle analytical requests that are outside the scope of the techniques available with the R&D analytical team
  • Understand instrumental analytical chemistry procedures and technologies and incorporate this understanding into applications that add value to company products and processes
  • Develop, improve, and customized equipment, processes and analytical methods
  • Prepare, review and improve standard operating procedures and training
  • Confer with Company scientists and engineers to conduct analyses for research projects, interpret test results and/or develop new or non-standard tests
  • Write technical papers and reports and prepare standards/samples and specifications for processes, facilities, products and tests
  • Maintain accurate records of all laboratory work and research in accordance with generally accepted laboratory principles
  • Provide detailed written reports of all completed projects with recommendations for future research and development efforts
  • Use knowledge of routine laboratory safety procedures, SDS’s and interpretations of hazards/toxicity data to perform all laboratory work in accordance with the written safety manual of company
  • Use knowledge of scale-up and troubleshooting procedures in conjunction with experience developed from bench top work to provide support to the development of manufacturing procedures and process development
  • Provide technical support to cross-functional groups such as sales and marketing
  • Be the key liaison for R&D between all of company’s analytical teams
  • Be the analytical lead to provide new methods to the plant QC team
  • Innovative with a systematic approach for problem solving
  • Gain experience in synthesis (esterification and alkoxylation) to assist in project work and ultimately have a better understanding of what to expect when carrying out analyses

  • Minimum of ten (10) years demonstrated experience in analytical chemistry in an industrial setting with experience in generating and interpreting chemical test data through quantitative and qualitative statistical analysis
  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from four-year college or university required
  • Strong instrumentation skills, experience with operating, maintenance and troubleshooting of analytical instrumentation
  • Ability accomplish tasks independently, but coordinate with team including chemists, engineers, technicians, and management
  • Strong oral and written communication
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis
  • Proficiency with HPLC, GPC, GC required
  • Experience / familiarity with ICP, FT-IR, viscosity and other analytical methods
  • Knowledge of the chemical composition, structure, and properties of substances and of the chemical processes and transformations that they undergo. This includes uses of chemicals and their interactions, danger signs, production techniques, and disposal methods
  • PC literate and proficient in commonly used business and scientific applications, including common research databases, search functions and statistical design of experiments
  • Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including meaning and spelling of words, and ability to communicate effectively in verbal, written and/or electronic presentation form appropriate to the needs of the audience
  • Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications and ability to choose the right mathematical methods or formulas to solve a problem
  • Ability apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems and to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables
