Senior Chemist
Globally successful personal care brand is seeking a collaborative Senior Chemist who is enthusiastic about developing product in the beauty care space!
Duties:
- Independently formulate new hair products with strong performance benefits and innovative technology stories
- Lead and manage all technical aspects of new formulation programs while ensuring that formulas align to project briefs, adhere to prescribed timetables, and fall within required cost targets
- Identify technical insights on new formulas to establish a clear scientific mode=of-action that builds into strong product concepts and claims
- Actively formulate to anticipate and avoid potential scale-up and manufacturing challenges
- Interpret product stability and preservative efficacy test findings and recommend action steps
- Work directly with stylists to qualify prototype performance, utilizing internal test salon as well as internal and external consumer use testing
- Evaluate formula design and performance of competitive products
- Support tech transfer to third party manufacturing facilities for scale-up and production, including identifying and generating appropriate product specifications. Must be willing to travel to third party manufacturing sites
- Communicate and present program updates and technical data within cross-functional internal and external project team environment
- Identify potential technical and regulatory issues, proactively establish, and implement an action plan to ensure issues are not realized in market
- Build and manage relationships with raw material vendors, contract manufacturers and external technical consultants
- Maintain strong working relationships within the company. Use these relationships to assess / identify project opportunities and issues
- Continuously enhance formulation knowledge and skills by attending industry trade shows, seminars, and mentoring junior chemists and technicians
- Research and maintain understand of hair and scalp science

Job Requirements
Technical Qualifications:
- BS/MS in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Pharmacy, or related science
- Minimum of eight years of personal care formulating experience required. Hair care development highly preferred
- High level of downstream experience formulating a wide range of products such as creams, lotions, solutions, serums, mousses, surfactant systems, and aerosols
- A passion for formulating new and innovative products, working with novel raw materials, and approaching formula design with a creative, non-conventional approach
- Thorough knowledge of cosmetic raw materials and understanding of latest technologies
- Self-starter with proven ability to effectively lead all technical aspects of projects from concept to launch, execute tasks within defined program timelines, and work independently with limited oversight
- Familiar with function and technical challenges of various packaging delivery systems; pump sprays, tubes, squeeze bottles, BOV, aerosols, air-less packs, and lotion pumps
- Experience in leading or assisting in tech transfer, scale-up, and full-scale production batches
- Familiar with GLP, cGMP, and QA/QC personal care industry best practices
- Experience with leading multiple projects in parallel and problem solving through challenges
- Must possess an entrepreneurial spirit and be willing to pivot as needed when priorities change
- Demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively on cross-functional teams
- Demonstrated exceptional aptitude towards understand consumer insights and applying them towards the development of superior product designs
- Formulation and raw material regulatory guidelines and restrictions knowledge required, specifically for NA and EU
- Exhibit excellent organization, planning, and multi-tasking skills
- Must have strong interpersonal, written/verbal, and presentation skills
- Experience with mentoring junior chemists, interns, co-ops, and temps a plus
