Silicone Formulation Scientist

This position will drive formulation research and development and scale up of new and existing modified silicon-containing products for targeted electronic market applications such as aerospace, automotive, consumer electronics and industrial segments.

Job Description:

  • Develop and demonstrate benefits of new formulation technology for targeted applications while leveraging both in-house and external intermediates, process, analysis, and quality control capabilities
  • Establish liquid RTV silicone formulation guidelines based upon deep understanding of polymer structure property relationships, polymer filler interaction, adhesion and interface phenomena, rheological property control, cross-linking, polymer and intermediates modification, formulation process technology, decomposition and depolymerization under various environmental conditions
  • Work with production to develop best in class manufacturing methods
  • Investigate improvements to the existing process and process chemistries, developing alternate processes by studying thermodynamics and kinetics of reactions
  • Develop manufacturing capabilities of products during scale up by working with plant process engineers and quality teams
  • Close collaboration with global product and application development teams as well as marketing and business functions
  • Provide professional customer support related to the use of new products including travel to customer as needed
  • Participate at relevant prioritized international and domestic conferences to present above mentioned scientific findings directly relevant to formulation science and engineering
  • Develop a solid understanding of relevant patent landscape and obtain effective patent coverage for proprietary technologies and processes

Key Metrics Role is Accountable For:

  • Deliver DoE based formulation related experimentation leading to prototyping thru leveraging in-house on-the-shelf and externally available technology and know-how for both existing and emerging technologies
  • Analyze and translate experimental result for both application development and platform technology project team members located in either US or elsewhere
  • Identify, investigate and procure identified new needs in analytical, process, and intermediates instrument and equipment in multi-year step by step approach based on core scientific and engineering capability development
  • Identify, investigate and procure professional software license for investigation and computer-based simulation capability
  • Plan and perform calibration, and other general maintenance and safety control of instrumentation and laboratory equipment
  • Span competitive landscape of both silicone and non-silicone containing competitors and report findings

Key Relationships:

  • Other scientists, application development engineering, process technology, manufacturing resources, quality, commercial team and external customers

  • PhD preferred, Masters may be considered with significant experience
  • Six Sigma Certification preferred
  • In-depth understanding of elastic, elasto-plastic and resinous silicon-containing polymer composite formulation science and technology with a focus on addition / UV cured liquid silicone rubber, adhesives, potting, coating, and room temperature cure silicone rubber (RTV’s)
  • Manufacturing experience with a good understanding of plant unit operations, limitations and strengths
  • Ability to translate customer needs into clear technical targets aligned with strategic business objectives
  • Effective planning and prioritization of projects to ensure of time delivery of new product technologies that will deliver business growth
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and handle multiple projects simultaneously and work in a global cross functional team environment with customer focus
  • US Citizenship or Green Card required

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD, both recent and post-doc experienced, in silicon-containing, organic, inorganic polymer chemistry, chemical engineering, and polymer engineering focused on electronic, photonic and optoelectronic target applications
  • No restriction for domestic and international travels
  • Strong communicator
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Must be adaptable and move quickly
  • There is a 3-6 month average project timeline
