Job Description

Sr. Chemist

Works in a laboratory setting to develop new coating formulas or to modify existing coating formulas with minimal supervision.  Typical projects will include new product development, modification of existing products, raw material evaluations, benchmarking studies, sample preparations, color matching, batch process review and specification testing.  The Sr. Chemist is expected to design and document all projects and to be familiar with all QC test procedures and factory processes.  This role has responsibility for the scale-up of batches and collaboration with QC as needed.

  • Coatings Formulation
  • Conduct independent research in a R&D Lab environment
  • Interact with the R&D leadership and staff, operations, supply chain, sales, marketing, and vendors to develop new products or modify existing products
  • Lead cross-functional projects to completion
  • Design benchmarking studies of products and interpret the results to clearly communicate advantages and disadvantages
  • Evaluate raw materials to make recommendations on their potential use
  • Interact with production to solve manufacturing / scale-up issues
  • Conduct investigations of product complaints
  • Perform testing using standard procedures
  • Develop and write test methods as needed
  • Record and organize projects in an electronic format
  • Enter or modify formulas into the formula database as needed for production
  • Coordinate and direct the activities of technicians and junior staff members as needed

Job Requirements


  • A four-year degree in a physical science and a minimum of 5 years formulating experience. Additional experience is a plus
  • Experience with epoxy and urethane technologies
  • Experience with cementitious coating applications and substrates
  • Commitment to quality and product design control
  • Experience in working with outside vendors and customers
  • Ability to work in an industrial laboratory setting
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and manage multiple projects
  • Experience in leading cross-functional projects and coordinating activities across various functional areas
  • Ability to develop and communicate reproducible manufacturing processes and instructions
  • Understanding of QC methods and the establishment of product specifications
  • Ability to follow standard operating procedures
  • Commitment to safety
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Skills and aptitude to take on additional leadership responsibilities as needed
