Sr. Coatings Chemist

This Sr. Chemist will do longer term development of polyurethane coatings, both water and solvent based for surfaces on the interior of automotive surfaces, from buttons, to dashboards, console, door panels, seat backs, etc.  Projects last 2-4 years and works directly with customers to meet coating property demands.  Will lead lab techs and give guidance to them.  Promotion potential is high as retirements are anticipated over the next couple of years.

This position provides an excellent opportunity for an individual to impact the technical organization within the Performance Coatings Group by contributing to the strategy and execution of various new product initiatives and technical projects for our interior OEM group.  This position will be based at the OH facility.  The core responsibilities and duties associated with this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

Core Responsibilities:

  • Be responsible for leading development projects of moderate to high complexity within the OE Interior Development team
  • Be able to utilize the broad spectrum of coatings chemistry in product development
  • Effectively use internal and external resources for the benefits of product development
  • Complete product development project(s) in a timely fashion
  • Provide training and guidance to 1-4 technicians and/or lower-level chemists
  • Provide support to manufacturing, internal, and external customers
  • Communicate technical results, problems, and possible solutions both orally and in writing to management, peers, and team members. Maintain a laboratory notebook
  • Support and follow PCG Stage-Gate Quality System
  • Selects approach, designs and executes experiments and applies analysis of results through use of technical experience and proficiency
  • Resolves product/process problems. Contributes to new product/process development and/or maintenance/improvement of a product through use of experimental results
  • Identifies formula/process adjustments, additions/deletions to product/product lines and test methods based on implementation of solutions determined via experimental work
  • Works effectively in a team environment
  • Develops the technical skills of technicians and/or professionals on team through on-the-job training
  • Achieves results through use of established laboratory and professional procedures
  • Maintains a safe work area through observance of all laboratory safety procedures and practices
  • Travel requirements: 10%

Job Requirements

Technical Qualifications:

  • Must be legally authorized to work in country of employment
  • Bachelor’s degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math field
  • 5 years of coatings formulation experience in an industrial setting
  • Organizational and planning skills
  • Able to adapt and change quickly in response to new situations/demands
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Project-management skills
  • Ability to tailor communications to fit the needs of the audience
  • Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in a STEM field
  • 7 years of coatings formulation experience
  • 5 years of 2K polyurethane experience
  • Experience working with products and technologies including, but not limited to, 1K, 2K, primer, monocoat, basecoat/clearcoat systems both solvent based and waterborne
  • Project leadership experience. Proven track record in successfully leading small project teams
  • Demonstrated ability applying structure-property relationships to achieve project goals
  • Strong analytical problem-solving skills, including root-cause analysis
  • Understanding of 1K + 2K solvent and waterborne coating formulation
  • Design for Six Sigma (DFSS)
  • Design of Experiment
