Sr. Development Pouching Engineer

This role will be responsible for leading and implementing programs and initiatives that will provide valuable support to their customers while driving profitable growth for the segment.  The engineer will be responsible for technical support in the pre-made pouching area and support the business and manufacturing groups to ensure success.  The role will include cross functional collaboration between marketing, sales, customer service, manufacturing, technical service, and corporate groups at multiple levels in the organization.  Programs and initiatives which the engineer will be responsible for include but are not limited to: new product development, customer application development, and materials cost take out initiatives.  In addition, the expectation of a senior development engineer is to assist with global leveraging of technologies and product platforms across the company network to support growth and technology transfer of the business.  Great communication skills with all levels of the company, independence, and initiative.  Travel will be required, 25%.

Top Three Short-Term Business Objectives (0-12 months)

  • Build rapport with the cross functional team and review opportunities and capabilities to further grow share in identified markets
  • To learn the product development systems (SMS, BCS, K2 process, SOC) & unit operations and gain understanding of assigned GCI sub-segmented product portfolio, detailed spec understanding, and manufacturing plant and equipment most relevant to submarket
  • Complete short term internal and external facing projects (each opportunity worth - $50,000 to $1,000,000)

Measurement of Success

  • Demonstrate understanding of how to network, collaborate, and influence within company team/functions
  • After – 6 months, conduct 3 customer visits
  • Design and produce trials in at least 2 plants and on 5-unit operations
  • Write and produce at least 10 projects or waivers
  • Complete 5 internal & 5 external projects

Top Three Medium-Long-Term Business Objectives (1-3 years)

  • Support customer base & deliver product solutions that lead to healthy growth of the GCI submarket by delivering key programs and providing technical support.
  • Understand the pouching submarkets and the key to their right to win with their customer base. Influence the direction of their pouching strategy from a product offering and technology standpoint to take a secure a majority share in the market
  • Assist in promoting the core spec offering and identify key gaps in their pre-made pouching product portfolio that inhibit them from gaining share. Charter new development programs as needed to better their position in the submarket and differentiate themselves from their competition (could be something that adds value or reduces cost).  Create new offerings where IP can be filed or trade secrets can be protected

Measurement of Success

  • Delivering 5 BCS projects per year worth a total of $5MM on average
  • File 1 invention disclosure per year
  • Recognized as a key technical leader in the pouching technology
  • Create new product offerings that secure their right to win in the submarket

Requirements:

  • BS/MS/PhD in Engineering or related (Industrial Technology, Packaging Science, Packaging Engineering, Printing). Would look at Associates degree with high level of experience in pouching
  • Pouching Engineering or Pouching Equipment Experience
  • Technical proficiency and ability to quickly learn key manufacturing processes
  • Experience with pre-made pouching assets and capabilities, equipment design responsibility preferred
  • Some CAD experience is helpful
  • Demonstrated technical proficiency and program impact
  • Capable of following a stage gate process and understanding of risk mitigation
  • Demonstrated knowledge of cost take out, new products and innovation
  • 2 or more years of customer engagement, process technology, plant operations experience and/or project management experience, preferably in the flexible packaging industry
  • High energy, willingness to learn, strong communication skills
  • Demonstrated experience collaborating and knowledge sharing across functions (sales, marketing, manufacturing, engineering, etc.)
  • Ability to work with external customers and internal stakeholders to solve product development challenges
