Sr. Manager of R&D

The company is seeking a talented Sr. Manager of R&D will deep food science expertise who can develop highly customized products that meet client needs and excel in the consumer market.  The Sr. Manager R&D is responsible for leading a team of R&D professionals.  This individual must be able to work effectively with customers as well as internal company staff including the COO, manufacturing, marketing, and sales.  This individual should have a MS in Food Science, deep R&D / food science experience, a successful product development track record, strong management skills, and be passionate about their customers and products.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage, coach, and develop and R&D team that consistently creates high custom products that meet customer market, flavor, and operational needs
  • Work directly with customers and senior company leadership to gain a deep understanding of customer requirements
  • Develop new products that meet customer needs for flavor, texture, color, nutritional content and price targets as well as adhere to government and industry standards
  • Create an R&D / product development process encompassing all the key steps – from requirements to brainstorming to formulation to customer acceptance
  • Check raw ingredients for maturity or stability for processing, and finished products for safety, quality and nutritional value
  • Assess and incorporate methods to improve aspects of food such as chemical composition, flavor, color, texture, nutritional value, and convenience
  • Develop new or improved ways of preserving, processing, packaging, storing, and delivering foods
  • Manage the project flow and ensure proper fulfillment of completion dates
  • Develop and manage the department annual budget
  • Create and maintain all department documentation (i.e. recipes, processes, etc.)
  • Comply and assist with all food regulation programs – USDA, HACCP, GLP, FDA
  • Foster a positive, high morale, high integrity work environment
  • Work collaboratively with senior staff and employees both within R&D as well as other internal functions to ensure alignment, cooperation, and trust

Requirements:

  • 10+ years of food science / R&D experience; minimum of 3 years in a management role supervising an R&D team
  • Masters level in food science or related fields such as chemistry or microbiology
  • Certified in food regulation programs – USDA – HACCP, GLP, FDA
  • Documented success in developing new food products that have excelled in the consumer market
  • Be a passionate self-starter and have interest in growing, learning and sharing
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills, experience with ERP (e.g. Syspro)
  • Preference for individuals with industry experience in developing new products for large quick service restaurant chains and food manufacturers
  • Some travel required to trade shows and select customer meetings
