Sr. Paint Formulation Chemist

They have one of the widest selections of paints and finishes for arts, crafts, and home decorating.  They are looking for a Sr. Formulation Chemist that has a bachelor’s degree in chemistry or related field.  5 years coatings formulation, and knowledge of acrylic resins and pigments.  This is a great opportunity to grow your career and experience with a company that is growing fast and invests in their employees!

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Paint Formulation Chemist is expected to achieve the following accountabilities while ensuring the highest regard to Safety, Quality, Productivity and Efficiency: 

Formulation Cost Savings and Material Consolidation 

  1. Implementation of formula adjustments targeting inefficient uses of materials or use of alternate materials.
  2. Identify and implement cost savings initiatives and quality improvements of existing products to include: Consolidation of raw materials, reduction of redundant raw materials, identification of alternative sources of materials
  3. Ensure accurate qualification of new raw materials for new products
  4. Interface with Purchasing to further develop supplier relationships related to Cost Savings Initiatives.

Process Improvements

  1. Maintain efficient Control measures to include, but not limited to: Submission of Product Status Reports, Product Performance Stability Tests for all formulation changes and new products, Quality Problem resolution and corrective action system.
  2. Proactive formulation enhancements to improve efficiencies and consistency in manufacturing.
  3. Interact with Production Staff to ensure understanding of product requirements and improvements.
  4. Work with Production Management regarding manufacturing and/or procedural process improvements for all products.

New Formulations

  1. Develop innovative paint products and specialty finishes.
  2. Conduct laboratory testing to assist Technical Manager in making qualitative and quantitative analysis.

Laboratory Support and Compliance

  1. On-time and accurate Product Testing and Product Feedback tracking to ensure efficient development process.
  2. Effective utilization of standard testing protocol to ensure products are created to satisfy requirements.
  3. Ensure positive Customer Service support and interaction to ensure timely resolution customer concerns.
  4. Provide product support or assistance to chemists, technicians and lab support.
  5. Self-educate and integrate new technologies associated with the growing demands of the market.
  6. Provide Technical – Educational support or assistance to chemists, technicians and lab support.
  7. Ensure cleanliness, organization and efficiency of the Lab

Accountabilities may also include other related activities as assigned by his/her immediate supervisor.

Salary

$80,000 - $90,000

Job Requirements

Requirements:

  • BS in Chemistry or related
  • Experience formulating acrylic (preferably water-based) coatings. These can be architectural or arts/crafts paint
  • Minimum of 5 years formulation development experience in liquid coatings – acrylic latex paints are of highest interest
  • Knowledge of specialty acrylic resins, pigments and other raw materials in acrylic paints and specialty finishes markets
