Sr. Powder Coatings Chemist

This person will be involved in NPD, reformulations, testing hands-on at the bench, and talking with customers as needed, etc.  The focus will be on thermoset powder coatings (epoxy, unsat polyesters).  Will take the lead and manage the Corrosion and Salt Spray testing program.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Knowledge of resins, curing agents and coating additives in the powder coatings industry
  • Evaluate new raw materials such as resins, curing agents, additives, etc.
  • Lead the Corrosion and Salt Spray testing program, including data reports with pictures and preparation for publishing the data. Perform long-term analysis on coasting performance and laboratory tests using approved testing methods
  • Perform analysis on incoming raw material samples/in-process production samples/finished goods
  • Derive starting formula based on customer requirements, prepare samples for trials (weigh up shots, extruder operation and mill operation for powder coating)
  • Adjust the formulations based on trials and errors, and field reports
  • Associate and communicate with Production and QC when required
  • Under minimal guidance and supervision, undertakes R&D development projects including formulation, powder preparation, spraying, testing, and evaluation of powder coatings to meet specific project requirements
  • Under minimal guidance and supervision, formulates and manipulates advance powder coatings technologies, product platforms, and adjust formulation based on trial-and-error methods
  • Under minimal guidance and supervision, able to develop and implement new and novel powder coating technologies
  • Ability to analyze and interpret the powder coatings using Differential Scanning Colorimetry, Viscosity Meter, Moisture Analyzer, Thermo-Gravimetric Analysis, Accelerated Xenon Arc Weather-O-Meter, Corrosion Tester, FT-IR Spectroscopy etc.
  • Function under limited supervision and be able to independently design experiments and write reports with limited review
  • Promotes the quality system through adhering to the elements of and being familiar with the philosophy, quality statement, quality manual, and procedures
  • Promotes and adheres to health, safety and environmental regulations by ensuring that standards, policies, and procedures are in place
  • Completes laboratory notebooks, technology/formulation databases, formula cards, and technical graphs, tables, and reports
  • Travel for technical conferences and product commercialization support (customer visits)
  • Apply chemistry knowledge to accelerate innovation development
  • Provide outside customer and technical support
  • Supervise, train or mentor new or lower-level chemists and technicians
  • Writes customer or supplier visit reports and other R&D reports
  • Performs other duties as required for the success of the company

Job Requirements

Technical Qualifications:

NDG/BS/MS level Chemist with 10+ years working with thermoset powder coatings color matching, extruder operation, testing and formulations, project management, and humidity and salt spray for corrosion evaluation, thermal analysis, and spectrophotometer use, and computer color programs.
