Sr. Scientist, Application Development

This is a hands-on, lab-based position, focused on the use of company’s hydrocolloids in finished food and beverages, or other applications.  The position requires a strong inclination to look at macrosystems on a molecular level, and the application of knowledge in physical properties, rheological instrumentation as well as data analysis and interpretation.  Projects are typically long-term and aim to problem solve (e.g. trouble

shooting, ideation, formula optimization), to develop a deep understanding of ingredient structure-function effects in a wide variety of applications, and to find innovative applications for novel company products.  Projects will involve evaluation, optimization, and understanding of the science and technology behind company hydrocolloid solutions within the context of complete formulas and processes to provide the desired functionalities in finished applications.  This role requires working with and learning from other R&D functions with company, as well as Marketing and Sales teams

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Strong individual contributor who will be key in solving long-term, complex, self-driven projects
  • Passion for science with a strong background in one or more of the following: hydrocolloid structure-function properties, emulsion science, protein chemistry, carbohydrate chemistry, encapsulation, and/or food physical chemistry
  • Designs and executes well-planned experiments, can analyze complex data, and propose innovative solutions. Documents experimental results and conclusions completely, in a well-organized fashion and in a timely manner
  • A team player that incorporates the fundamental knowledge of other R&D functions, as well as creative ideas outside of R&D
  • Strong interpersonal and presentation skills to share key learnings both inside and outside the organization
  • Ensures projects are completed on time, using the proper company ingredients for the functionality required and processing techniques that are appropriate for the application. Ensures reports and presentations provided are of high quality and professional
  • Participates in technical discussions, both with technical colleagues and customers to share knowledge and experience, providing input for solving challenges
  • Role includes regional and international travel to trade shows, conferences, customers and other company technical sites

Requirements:

  • MS in Food Science with 5 years of related industry experience or BS in Food Science with 8-10 years’ relevant industry experience
  • Strong Food Science / Food Chemistry background, experience working with hydrocolloids and proteins applications experience
  • Fluent in English; excellent technical writing and oral communication skills
  • Must be proactive, energetic, curious, highly motivated to learn, and learn quickly and dynamically when executing daily activities
  • A team player with outstanding interpersonal skills
  • Self-starter, pays attention to detail, has a sense of urgency
  • Enjoys a fast-paced environment, positive attitude, and ready to learn
  • With project needs understood, can work independently to complete the project
  • Good creative problem-solving skills
  • PC literate: WORD, EXCEL, PPT
