ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The scope of the position is to synthesize high performance materials based on thermoset chemistry for the Advanced Materials business. This position entails exploring new synthetic reactions, modifying existing synthetic processes, and performing & understanding material characterization as it relates to structural and performance properties of epoxies, benzoxazines, bismaleimides, amines and their precursors. The candidate must be a US citizen.
In summary, as the Senior Synthesis Scientist, you will:
• Develop new generations of high-performance materials based on thermoset chemistry,
• Modify existing thermoset materials to improve their cost/performance characteristics,
• Generate original ideas and solutions to synthetic problems and secure new IP,
• Effectively collaborate with formulators and application scientists to mature new resins and chemistries,
• Support process development for pilot trials and product scale up as related to the chemistry of new and existing products,
• Engage internal and external collaborators and cross functional teams including marketing, sales, and supply chain in support of project objectives.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

• Minimum Master of Science, PHD of Science degree preferred, Chemistry, Polymer Science, Chemical Engineering, Material science or equivalent discipline.
• 0–2-year industrial research experience with 4+ years background in synthesis and characterization of epoxies, bismaleimides, other thermoset resins, and amine products.
• Required: 3-5 years industrial research with demonstrated experience in organic synthesis.
• Strong understanding of small molecule synthesis and polymer chemistry,
• Good knowledge in structure property relationships,
• Thermoset resin processing, properties, and applications,
• Hands on experience with analytical equipment such as HPLC, NMR, DSC, DMA, TGA, IR, etc. and data interpretation,
• Application knowledge of epoxy resins and amine chemistries that are used in composites, adhesives, coatings, and electronic applications,
• Desirable knowledge in high temperature thermoset chemistries and their use in composite materials for aerospace and defense applications,
• Excellent oral and written communication skills,
• Strong interpersonal skills,
• Must have a good level of proficiency with Internet, Email, and Microsoft programs.
