TS & PD Chemist

Mid-sized chemical organization looking for a technical service and formulation chemist who has experience formulating coatings.  If you enjoy thinking outside of the box, this could be a great opportunity for you!  This company offers great benefits and is growing!

The TS & PD Chemist will be expected to design lab studies/experiments; formulate coating adhesive, and sealant systems using company’s polyurethane/polyester products; coat or cast to various substrates; conduct appropriate chemical/physical tests to compare performance against competitive controls; investigate root causes of performance issues; generate and record application-specific product performance data, especially for company’s new products; work as a team with Sales and Marketing to create product promotional literature, starting point formulations, technical conference papers/presentations, distributor training materials, etc.; and work as a team with R&D to share information that can assist their efforts to develop improved product versions.  Additional responsibilities, in coordination with Sales, include providing technical support and troubleshooting to customers, assisting in the development of new business opportunities, as well as occasionally attending trade shows we exhibit at.

  • Perform project work which may include any or all:
    • Problem solving related or product performance
    • Coatings/adhesives/sealants application and testing according to ASTM and other standard test methods
    • Documentation including report writing
    • Communicate proactively with customers when appropriate
    • Contribute to company knowledge base and understanding
  • Ability to perform established experimental procedures to meet project goals – hands on preparation of formulations, safely handling raw materials and equipment; running stakeholders in clear, concise time
  • Position may require 5-20% travel time
  • Lab studies are self-planned and designed, applying the scientific method, with guidance from Sales and input from R&D, to address specific objectives
    • Interpret results, propose conclusions and follow-up work
    • Responsible for logically organizing and analyzing data
    • Presenting results in written and/or oral form
  • Provide technical support to customers as needed, by making best recommendations for products, processing conditions, and testing
  • Conduct any appropriate lab tests to support
  • Use applications knowledge to help develop new products and demonstrate differentiating attributes to improve product portfolio
  • Maintain upkeep, organization and inventory of Applications lab supplies and equipment
  • Propose/Purchase any new equipment necessary to maintain high quality of experimental work
  • Work in lab safely and adhere to all policies. Participates in all safety related activities and meetings.  Maintains a safe work environment
  • Performs all above responsibilities safety, ethically and in compliance with all federal and state regulations

Job Requirements

Technical Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, polymer science
  • At least 2 years of Coatings technical experience
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft systems including Outlook and Excel
  • Must demonstrate competence with various software packages including Microsoft office and willingness to learn additional company specific software packages
