Waterborne Coatings Formulations Chemist

The Chemist has the responsibility for commercializing new or existing coatings technology to support the revenue growth and objectives of the corporation.  Working as part of a small, agile group, the Senior Chemist will develop and test solvent-borne coatings for consumer and industrial applications.  This will entail working on products form concept through completion, including formulation, raw material evaluation, pigmentation, testing, and development of application techniques, product scale up, and troubleshooting.

  • Lead and execute projects for consumer and industrial maintenance coatings
  • Use sound data-based decision processes to draw conclusions from test results and provide input to the rest of the project team, on appropriate next steps on projects
  • Use the appropriate balance of theoretical and practical knowledge to accelerate the development and commercialization of consumer and industrial maintenance coatings
  • Develop new test methods as necessary to accelerate the development and commercialization of new products
  • Demonstrate leadership in the industry by making presentations at trade shows
  • Provide progress updates through the regular issuance of written and verbal reports
  • Work seamlessly as a member of cross-functional project teams
  • Provide training to company marketing and field personnel, agents and customers
  • Maintain records of experiments, results and conclusions in a lab notebook

Requirements:

  • BS degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or other scientific technical field
  • Minimum of seven years of experience formulating and testing waterborne coatings for consumer and industrial maintenance applications
  • Broad and deep understanding of the consumer and industrial maintenance coatings market, including the following:
    • Current suppliers, coating customers and end users
    • Superior knowledge of industry test methods and their significance
    • Understanding of competitive capabilities
  • Proven track record of generation of new knowledge, products, or procedures, to meet the business needs of company
  • Proven ability to use fundamental polymer properties to predict end-use performance
  • Demonstrated use of Design of Experiments
  • Proven ability to work effectively on cross-functionally project teams
  • Ability to travel approximately 10% of the time, domestically and internationally, to fulfill responsibilities of the position
  • Ability to work safely in company laboratories, manufacturing, and customer facilities.
  • Good communication and presentation skills
  • Key attributes are strong business mind, customer focused, multi-task ability, a “can do” attitude and a successful track record measured by a high level of product commercialization rates

CONSIDERED A PLUS:

  • Advanced degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or other scientific technical field
  • Knowledge of aerosol technology would be ideal
